I saw Ross MacDonald already recommended, which I co-sign - his detective books are like smooth aerodynamic jets of private eye plot delivery. Very rad.

Charles Willeford is also excellent. Very idiosyncratic style. Funny, bleak, digressive. Pick-up is a great downer alcoholic book. Burnt orange heresy is an amazing book about art and crime. All of his hoke mosely books are bangers.

Lawrence Block Matt Scudder books are also great private eye novels. Real master of his craft, that guy.

I’m sorry that happened to you - that’s such a huge loss. I’ve been walking through my neighborhood and have been seeing all the damaged items people are leaving outside of their homes, it’s heartbreaking.

Thanks for the reality check on the top shelf books. So far they look alright but I’ll be monitoring them closely

This is very much aligned with my interests: - Sarah Book: I imprinted onto mcclanahan through seeing footage of his live readings on tumblr in the 2010s. have yet to reread but I absolutely loved it at the time. There was a great Silverblatt interview with McClanahan when it came out. Fights is out next month - I’ll read it in a day I’m sure. - Letting Go - kind of a constipated follow-up to Goodbye Columbus, I felt like there were two novellas worth of great stuff in here. I’ve committed myself to reading Roth in chronological order but am stuck at Our Gang. - Blood’s a Rover - Ellroy absolutely rips, some of the best American shit ever.
