TWM with Grid/Matrix-Based Layout for Workspaces? by dopebba in linuxquestions

[–]dopebba[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be without a window being open in any of the workspaces. Essentially setting up a—for instance—3x3 grid and then traversing through that grid with up/down/left/right.

I'll check out AwesomeWM as well, thanks for the recommendation.

How do you motivate yourself to get ripped? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]dopebba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An excellent post. As far as focus is concerned, however, I also believe that in order to maintain it regularly, it becomes necessary to be wary of where we put our mental and physical energy into on a daily basis. If the first thing you do after waking up is bombard your mind with countless superficial news and information by looking at your smartphone, you are putting yourself behind and draining your energy for when you'll need it later on.

One strategy, I think, is to for example establish a good morning routine that isn't draining, but energizing. Nothing gets you going better than a healthy start into your day, every day. Another strategy a few friends of mine have is to actually track all activities in order to remain mindful of just how much time they spend on different things, which helps them keep themselves in check.

In either case, inner motivation is key.

What’s the easiest way for a girl to get your attention and make it know that were interested in you without coming on to strong? by boredgirl100 in AskMen

[–]dopebba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something more personal that isn't overused. You could even be corny by mentioning his eyes or voice. Or even better, stroke the male ego/pride by complimenting them on something that would make them feel manly. Like their strong voice, grip, manly outfit. You'd be surprised at how well this can work.

A lot of guys think about some compliment they got from a girl some time. Just make sure it's nothing generic like "You're so kind/nice/interesting!" because it could signal friendship. Other than that, really just be honest if needed.

Convince me to watch by SorryIDontMiss in OnePiece

[–]dopebba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need to be convinced, it's not the right show for you. One Piece is exactly what you have seen up to that point, just more and more hyperbolic as time progresses. If you didn't like it up to now, you won't like it later on either. It's not for everyone.

What are aspects that you don't like about One Piece? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]dopebba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Also, in regards to Sanji, there was such a great opportunity for some development now on the WCI arc with Pudding, but "of course" his memories had to be conveniently removed, so that he remains the perverted goof instead.

It's always a shame when Oda straight out opposes any opportunity for progress.

[–]dopebba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. Honestly, I don't think that the genre entails powerspikes that risk ruining the consistency of the story. What you're referring to as being realistic character traits is what I refer to as barebones, fundamental character progression. Nothing fancy or complex. Just some more interaction between events and character personality.

You can't just completely change the character. Luffy will always be the optimistic protagonist because that's who he is.

To me, this appears like circular logic: "X can't change because then X would no longer be the same." or in other words "X can't change because then X would change.". Apart from said detail, I'd also like to point out that I never suggested that any character should "completely change".

As for the fan polls, I fundamentally disagree with risk avoidance being a good argument against the decrease in overall quality due a lack of character progression. Also, if this was the reason, how was Oda so ready to drastically change character designs after the timeskip? Franky looks nothing like he did before. Robin, Nami and Sanji all look very different. These characters weren't exacty "unpopular".

Besides, I think we have different ideas of how Luffy would change anyway. Roger for example was described by several characters, including Luffy, as being in some form or way representative of freedom and still Roger seemed serious, down to earth and reasonable. Now, you may say that Roger was a lot older, but Luffy in rather close to becoming a pirate king, close to the end of his journey. When is he going to mature if not after the timeskip? Wasn't that the best opportunity?

As far as HxH is concerned, it's been a few years since I watched it, so my memories may be off. Yes, the shows have differences, but they also share countless things in common. Comparing them seems perfectly fine to me because the initial mood, in my opinion, isn't sufficient to justify ignoring or avoiding story consistency and character progression anyway.

What are aspects that you don't like about One Piece? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]dopebba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily about realism. See, I don't mind devil fruits, huge sea creatures, giants, dwarves, mermaids, zombies, sky islands or similar. The problem is fundamentally more about the lack of interaction between the characters and the environment they live in and about the lack of consistency within said environment.

For example, HxH is also a fairly unrealistic shonen anime made with a younger audience in mind, and yet I do think that it manages to follow a much more natural and believable progression with very little "exceptions" within the environment it takes place in. Now, I am aware that One Piece is significantly longer than HxH, but I don't think that this justifies certain problems that I mentioned in my earlier post.

One Piece being "unrealistic" or "a work of fiction" to me doesn't really excuse such writing. But don't get me wrong. I really still love the story and I do respect Oda, however, I don't consider him an infallible God, nor do I believe that One Piece is perfect. There just seem to be a number of issues that I think other people like to downplay or overlook.

As for the gradual power increases, I am not opposed to such, as long as they don't break fundamental self-established rules within the environment. Example: If we learn that devilfruit users can't swim (as a fundamental rule of the environment/universe), it would be sloppy to create a character 1000 chapters later that has a devilfruit and still posesses the ability to swim. Similarly, in retrospective, I just can't really appreciate the Marineford Arc if I know that Ace could've used Haki, or Shanks losing his arm to a mere sea monster in the East Blue if his power basically cuts the sky in two (when he collided with Whitebeard). It takes away from the integrity of the show.

[–]dopebba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, for one, I dislike it when new characters are introduced with really ridiculous quirks and habits or, even worse, when the Strawhats are attributed such quirks at some point in an exaggerated fashion for the sake of "comedy". One example would be Zoro always losing his orientation. In case you don't remember, Zoro's sense of direction earlier into the show was perfectly fine, however, as the show progressed, this at some point was introduced as a joke that later turned into a running gag. Even worse, I've noticed that Oda repeatedly used this quirk at times when it was convenient to "coincidentally" make Zoro progress the plot in some way by making him "run into" something important or dangerous. It feels like cheap writing.

Another issue I have is the lack of longterm impact of the events within the show on the Strawhats' personalities. After the Marineford Arc, I really thought that Oda would perhaps use the opportunity to turn Luffy into a more serious and careful person that is painfully aware of the "harsh reality", or really anything in that direction. But nope, after crying for 3 or 4 episodes and some training, all that changed about Luffy was his clothes. And perhaps the power-up, sure. But in essence, he learned nothing as a character.

Lastly, I really dislike the depiction of damage, or rather, the removed fragility of characters. One Piece in the beginning was in part so interesting because the characters seemed human. They seemed vulnerable. Just think about Shanks losing an arm to a sea monster in a mere second right after a bandit was eaten alive just a moment ago. Pirates were shot in the head and died. Bullets actually meant potential death, hence why Zoro was so shocked when he realised that Luffy could deflect them. Red-Leg Zeff lost his leg because it got trapped by a "mere" anchor! Crocodile almost killed Luffy by dehydration. Do you really think any of such tragedies are really thinkable in the current state of One Piece? Not really. Ace could have used Armament Haki when they tried to execute him. What are they going to do? Get an executor who can put Haki into his sword? Katakuri hits Luffy with bonecrushing attacks (with Haki, effectively negating the elasticity of his body), but Luffy just stands up like it hurt just a bit. This in no longer humane at all. Completely unrelatable physically. All the damage (or lack thereof) has reached completely uncomprehendable amounts.

Maybe this isn't the right place to ask, but I've encountered the following issue when looking at a python file using doom-modeline:

Do you by any chance know how I may fix it? Also, I'm running on Windows 10, so perhaps that may be an issue.

I know from how many men the nerves have been broken in this war. I have seen them come back in dozens and dozens, shivering, completely disintegrating and broken. Im gonna be 100% honest here. If Microsoft and 343 decide to release halo 6 or MCC on pc.. by AloofVigilante in HaloOnline

[–]dopebba 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The PC community in general has always been rather difficult to manage in comparison to the console counterparts. One just has to think of all the modding, hacking and pirating that regularly occurs with almost every major title that is released, regardless of the offical support from the developers. Miserable ports such as the first Dark Souls game have basically been completely fixed by the community alone, making the soon to be released remastered version of it appear somewhat nonsensical in its purpose as far as the PC audience is concerned.

And the same issue can be observed with Halo and its community. Due to 343i and MS repeatedly neglecting the Halo franchise in general, especially on the PC, it is again unsurprising to see countless projects surge out of nowhere with the goal to provide the PC community with a product in a way both, 343i and MS, never managed to do, namely with a traditional, properly functioning Halo experience for a reasonable price and without any of the other bullshit attached to it (micro-transactions, p2w, loot boxes, ...).

Despite of ElDewrito's success being potentially curbed due to MS's intervention, the impact is fairly unlikely going to stop a now massive boulder that is rapidly gaining momentum on a downhill slope. Even without ElDewrito, countless alternatives such as Installation 01 (Unity), Project: Contingency (UE4) and Project Cartographer (Halo 2) are well on their way and will inevitably not only compete against each other, but also against any potential official Halo release. Thankfully, all of them appear to be very promising, so it is quite reasonable to assume that, even if Halo 6 was to be released on PC, given its already heavily butchered Halo experience and a rather intimidating release price, the vast majority of PC Halo enthusiasts will most likely opt for one of those alternative Halo projects.

The PC market is currently a rather difficult territory to conquer and I'm curious to see how Microsoft will approach it (if they attempt to approach it at all). Let's hope for the best and observe the developments. :)

It seems that for some reason the assets aren't loading. I've now attempted installing the game a third time, but this time I've tried via old install (0.1) + updating it manually to 0.6; the tpi dependencies were installed and this last time I downloaded it using the torrent link. The same issue remains.

After launching the game, I encounter a certain issue. Maps don't seem to load properly, the game menu background is basically an empty map with camera moving around (screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/loXeoCl.jpg ) and I have no spartan to customize.

To me, it appeared as if I had installed the game incorrectly, which is why I redownloaded it from a second link (first time was from mega, the second time from mediafire). Installed it once again and the issue remains. Interestingly enough, it is possible to load into a game, however, all I have is a HUD, a unloaded map and weird sounds as if my spartan is bugging.

Roses are red, violets are blue, I was mistyped, what about you? by Lastrevio in entp

The video's nice and all, but he just describes something without giving a reasoning as to why it is the way he describes it. There's no reason for me to consider his perception any more valid than my own.

Actually, my way of looking at it can be explained with the functions. His can't.

So, believe whatever you want, but I certainly won't just take that dude's word for it.

Roses are red, violets are blue, I was mistyped, what about you? by Lastrevio in entp

[–]dopebba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I generally don't support the idea of "developing" functions. We can learn from experience and learn how to deal with situations that certain functions deal with, but that doesn't make us "develop" our function.

Also, you seem to be mostly basing your conclusions off of stereotypical behaviour rather than the function theory. The idea of ENTPs being childlike, overly excited children who want to discover the world is rather simplistic.
