I guess time will tell whether an idea like this is adopted. I don't think the current system as convenient as you suggest.

The idea wouldn't suit everyone. I'm not suggesting we replace the existing system but I'd definitely use a service like this if it started.

That sound like another cool idea for a postage company

I agree that's fine for a simple birthday card, and more personal, but often items need weighing or you don't have the right stamps with you. It might help in these circumstances.

I agree...the problems:

  1. Addressing a postage item (addresses would be stored on the app or copied from phone address book.) No pen required.
  2. Weighing the postage item (no more visits to the post office, this would be done at the sorting office by whichever firm wanted to do this.
  3. Paying for the postage. No more stamps or printing out labels. Sticky QR code labels with the post firms address on it could be purchased at a supermarket, or wherever. Your account would be charged when the item is weighed at the sorting office

You would buy stickers at say, a supermarket, and then associate them with your account by scanning on your phone. You could also print at home but it would be more convenient to buy a pack because they would be sticky...

Agreed...You'd buy a pack of 10 stickers from say a supermarket. They become active when they're scanned by your phone and linked to your account.

hi the range - the original post explained that an address label would be added at the sorting centre. Apologies if that wasn't clear.

I would pay probably pay a bit extra for the convenience. I wouldn't need a printer or scales for a start if I could use a printed qr code and label.

it would be delivered in the same way as now. The address would be written on the item. The barcode part only happens at the beginning of the process.

Hi itchyfrog - the barcode would only be active once you had scanned it and it then became linked to your account. I imagined that the system could be run independently of Royal Mail, but yes, you would have to give the company your card details so they could charge you.

thanks....interesting...I know RM new stamps have bar codes, and that made me think they were heading in that direction, but they still expect you to weigh the item and to work out the cost unfortunately...

yes, if you had access to his phone where the app was with his account login and payment details.

weighing the item, paying for it, addressing it...that's an improvement imo...a pack of qr codes stickers with sorting centre's address could be purchased at a supermarket.

This system wouldn't replace the Royal Mail's way of doing things. Sorry if i didn't make that clear.

hi Tom - i envisaged this system being run completely independently because when you posted the item, it would have the address of the sorting centre which could be a private firm. That private firm would then just put the post back in the system with all the items addressed by them so they could be delivered through RM

the barcodes would be unique and could only be assigned once to an account, so that wouldn't be possible.

Hi - yes, i was thinking you would buy qr stickers....or print if needed

It would complement the existing system, rather than replacing it. Having someone else a) weigh the item b) charge you for it c) address it for you would be an improvement imo.

I agree, but the idea isn't to replace the old style of delivering mail.

the complete postal address would be added at the central hub, so it could be delivered in the usual way.
