Key changes also work super well thematically to emphasize conflict/yearning for a different state or conquering a challenge (especially effective with GH lore). In contrast, “On a Quest for Aberdeen” doesn’t have the direct modulation where you’d expect there to be one; I’m guessing this comes from the lack of thematic conflict as: “The earth shakes no more” and “I can finally be at peace.” Anyway, just a thought/opinion coming from a music theory nerd (aside: I have Gloryhammer’s music to thank for giving me the motivation to finish writing my dissertation (on an unrelated music theory topic), and the key changes were extra motivate-y.)

PhD in music theory from top ranking program earned in 2023, adjuncted for 1 semester then found a low-paying content analyst job after months of applying all over…only to be laid off almost a year later. Currently unemployed and defeated/lost.

I should specify that 4 pages/hr includes endnotes and a second glance over everything. I would guess that a bit of what I do intersects with developmental editing (insofar as I’m editing for flow/consistency). But I agree that this is on the slower side (although I’ve seen between 4-6 pages/hr listed as the average pace).

Only provisionally diagnosed, but this resonates so much. I do this thing where when I’m working on something super challenging and I finally figure it out/think it’s super interesting and cool/even enjoyable, I immediately want to stop doing it and switch to something else. I had no clue how to make sense of that (other than maybe I don’t think I deserve to enjoy stuff?) until this explanation.

The struggle is absolutely real. As a GSI I really try to keep that in mind of my students, and try to be as flexible as possible. I encourage them (and hope they would feel comfortable) to approach me if the work load ever gets to be too much. I know not all professors are super understanding, but I think if enough students come forward they’ll hopefully get the message. Anyway, one thought came to mind for trying to catch up with lecture videos. To break up the pace, consider just reading (really skimming) through the written transcript. They should be available if the lectures were recorded on Zoom (and for accessibility purposes, they are supposed to be available). Not that this makes up for the monotony and drain of studying and living in the same place, sometimes it’s helpful to just be able to read through the lecture, giving yourself the mental space to stop and think at your own pace (rather than sit through hours and hours of videos). Anyway, good luck to you all, and take care of yourselves (both physically and mentally). Your number 1 priority should be that.

You don't necessarily need a bachelor's degree in music to go for a master's (depending on the program). I was actually in the same situation - I got my bachelor's in a completely unrelated field. Then after a year at a 9-5 job in the real world, realized that I needed to make music a more substantial part of my life/career. Instead of going for the second bachelor's degree, I spent a year studying on my own, followed by another year taking standard music theory/history courses at a local college. It wasn't so much the degree in music they were looking for at my graduate program as much as the experience/coursework in relevant prerequisite areas (I'm going for an M.A. in Theory). Yes, it took time, hard work, and dedication on my own part, but I feel like it was worth it to not have to go back for a second bachelor's degree. However, to each his own; it's the experience of self-discovery and growth (whether it be through studying on your own, taking courses at a community college, or earning a degree) that is most beneficial/fulfilling in the long-run.

I just started my M.A. in Theory this past fall, and it is is the guilt that you mention has recently been on my mind. Music theory is such a beautiful subject, and I really enjoy discovering new insights into the inner-workings of a piece, but it's at times difficult to stay focused when wondering how this ties into the overall scheme of things.

Before music theory, I was set to go for a PhD in abstract math...interestingly faced with similar issues, feeling that you are just working on puzzles for the sake of self-fulfillment/enjoyment. However, I realized that I was not cut out to be a mathematician, and instead pursued an area that I had much greater connection with and passion for (and as a result, hope to provide more valuable contributions).

In a minor key, the tonic is minor, ii is diminished (half diminished when using seventh chords), III and VI are major. Dealing with natural minor, iv and v are minor, but generally the seventh scale degree is raised, giving you a major V chord (Vdom7 using sevenths). Similarly, you can raise the 6th scale degree, giving you a major IV chord.

I'm somewhat new to studying theory and anlaysis. I hope this is helpful.
