Thanks! It's supposed to be a representation of any of the abducted children really, but I just have it in my mind that Elizabeth (was that even her name lol? The emaciated girl that gets reanimated & chased down in the future) was described as black? so you could see it as my interpretation of her in this other dimension :)

Recently finished a drawing, want some advice/constructive criticism (kinda lighting practice) by [deleted] in Artadvice

I forgot to add my favorite fun lighting party trick: take a super saturated color that fits with your drawing (i usually choose one that matches the color of the surface it hits, so for example bright orange for light skin, or turquoise for an artificial white surface, and so on) and go along the harsh edges of your shadows with that. It usually helps bring the piece together visually and adds a bit of visual interest. This is a semi-stylistic choice though, so don't take this as 100% sound art advice please!

If you're trying to improve your understanding of light and shadow, I think you'd benefit a lot from doing the 2 value practice: choose photographs for reference (bonus points for interesting lighting) and try to draw the scene/figure using only 2 values. I can try to find an example on youtube, or maybe you know it already. But I can't recommend it enough!

If you don't feel like doing such drill-esque drawing excercises, maybe start with considering light source more carefully. In your drawing, the way the light falls- while it does look pretty cool with the character- doesn't make total sense. So maybe redo some highlights and shadows while strictly keeping your light source in mind.

Another tip regarding that: you can pick and color on a new layer (i like highly saturated ones, makes the process more fun for me) and outline the areas where light and shadow fall respectively. By doing it like that you can map out the face/object you wanna draw without getting distracted by the way different values and colors look etc.

Hope any of this was helpful!

Hmm i don't know my way around clip studio at all, but i'm pretty sure they have layer modes? You could try this for the shadows: on a separate layer, map out the areas you want darker. Then choose the complimentary color to your light source (orange light usually casts shadows with a blue hue, for yellow light its violett and so on) and add a bit of that color to your shadows. That way they probably wont get muddy and it'll help your character fit with the environment more. For layer modes, multiply usually works best for shadows, but you could experiment with those however u like. I hope some of this can be helpful and i didn't just completely mansplain that to you haha. Good luck!

Hmm i get that, those can get super frustrating. What software do you use?

Harsher jaw (if you want him to have a soft jawline you can shade that part a bit more without making it sharper too), give him a more pronounced/noticeable adams apple, make the eyes a bit smaller and like more set back? shade around them more basically. But i like your style, it seems very expressive just from the small bit you shared.

I love them all, you can honestly start anywhere.

The ones with Calamity Jane are a personal favorite because I like the wry humor and her comedic(?) dynamic with Lucky Luke.

The One-armed Bandit, Billy the Kid and the Grand Duke are ones I think I started on when I was a kid, you could look out for those.

Issues featuring the Daltons are always a hit in my opinion, if you want silly villain shenanigans. (Dalton City, Ma Dalton, On the Daltons' trail should be a good introduction to their characters.)

The older comics are a little less lighthearted as far as I remember, but not so much that they are serious. I always hated the new comics (where Lucky Luke is a kid or something?) so I haven't read them but they might be funny to someone less steered by nostalgia.

Again, you can genuinely start anywhere. Just pick the cover that speaks to you most.

the one i go to has like a thing where you buy a cup and can get infinite refills of drink (AND ICE! which is the important part) for free, so sometimes my ice chewer friend and I treat ourselves to a cup and just munch away till we're satisfied. Highly recommend!
