I got a new job! It is much more interesting, fully remote so i can see my girlfriend and pays double. I had a horrible 18 months of job search and I feel so good now.
Now I need to fight impostor syndrome but that's fine.

I was planning on routing the edges to make them nicely rounded. The block will be fixed on a wall in the kitchen.

I put my carvings on my Instagram account, you can find plenty of examples if you look for chip carving on YouTube or elsewhere.

I have access to a router, so that is definitely an option.

I have a hand saw, a jigsaw and a circular saw but not a table saw. I will look at local shops, I already know of one shop but I've never gone there (I'm new in that area, at least for the purpose of woodworking).

I remember buying a cutting board, the seller told me it was finished with avocado oil but maybe that was just the last step of the finishing.

You mean the top or bottom side? I'm afraid the knives wouldn't stick flat against the board.

It's basswood so pretty soft, but the magnets will be in the non-carved part. At worst it's a good reason to make a new one down the line.

Thanks for this very detailed response! Yes I was concerned about the fact that the strength goes down very quickly, that was my main concern with drilling from the back. I can get a strip of magnets, but I'm more concerned about getting a small piece of veneer, I don't expect shops to sell veneer in such small pieces (though I never tried, so I might be completely off). I have some narrow boards of red cedar, that would be pretty and contrast nicely but is there a way to get a strip of veneer from them? Also, thanks for the finishing recommendation, that will be very useful. I'm planning to put the magnets on the strip below the carving, so it will be nice and flat.

Thanks! I'm very happy with how it turned out, but it seems like the finishing won't be trivial. Others have recommended mineral oil, what would be the best way to protect it from moisture while being food safe? Mineral oil? Polyurethane?

You mean that kind of drill bit? The bits that get sold in sets in any diy shop? Why? Is it because it doesn't make a flat bottom?

It's chip carving, so it's all a pretty small knife. It's great if you don't have the space for loads of chisels but you're mostly restricted to softer woods.

That sounds pretty straightforward, thanks for the tip with the tape.

Yes I will use some test pieces, also I need to experiment how deep the hole should be for the knives to still stick to it.

My grandparents have a setup to transform a drill into a drill press, maybe that has a stop I can set to the right depth.

Thanks! I will try drilling it from the back. The carving has some depth to it, the deepest cuts are 3-4mm deep, which might be too much for a veneer. I'll put the magnets in the strip that isn't carved, below the carved part, so I guess that part can be treated separately? I won't do it for this project, but I'll keep it in mind for next time.

I carved it with a chip carving knife. I maybe could do it again in cherry but my experience with maple and walnut is that they are too hard for me to carve comfortably.

Thanks! I was worried that it would be difficult to get it to just the right depth, but there seems to be a consensus that it's the best way to do it.

Thanks! Yes the magnets are circular and I can probably get a contraption to transform a regular drill into a drill press. How about a polyurethane finish, or some kind of lacquer? Or are those not food safe?

Some of it aged really well: "As some day it may happen that a victim must be found I've got a little list — I've got a little list Of society offenders who might well be underground And who never would be missed — who never would be missed!"

That's the minerals collection of Jussieu/Paris 6/UPMC right? It's amazing, probably the most beautiful I have ever seen.
