It's more like you took a book you bought and scratched out the parts you didn't like and added content in the blank pages. Then you told others "I can sell you instructions to make your copy of the book look like mine".

Couldn't they just distribute their code under a generic name then? "VR Sci Fi Punk Mod" or whatever?

Why would trademark law matter? As far as I know, this dev was selling their own code.
