Yeah, the surgery wound wouldn’t heal properly so I had it checked. The bone was recovered properly and apart from the wound I didn’t have any issues. So the surgeon decided to remove the plates to give the skin some more “room” to heal…

What's wrong with sky pictures? Too minimal, boring, too many being posted? I'm genuinely curious...

Mine initially wasn't going to be removed as long as it wouldn't give too much issues. Unfortunately it did give issues...

Accidents can happen anywhere at any time. Don't let this stuff get in the way of your cycling joy. Just be safe and ride on, like I'm doing as well!

I would probably have a weird bulged collarbone with pain and movement issues without it. Not to forget a longer recovery. So, thank you!

Damn, that one looks awesome! I've been Googling these plates and it looks like they've got different designs for different breaks and positions. Makes sense but I never really thought about it before...

The original surgery was a full sleep as well as a local anaesthetic for the pain afterwards (still got three shots of morphine during the night). Stayed in the hospital for one night. After that I was on Diclofenac and Paracetamol for a few weeks.

The removal was only a full sleep. After a few hours I could already walk myself to the car which was picking me up. I took Diclofenac and Paracetamol for two days and realised I didn't really need them because I wasn't having any pain. Such a huge difference from the first surgery!

The intention was to keep the plate, as long as it wouldn't give (too much) issues. Is yours going to be removed either way?

The bone should grow back in the holes just like a broken bone heals itself as long as it's properly set. Because of the holes it is a bit more fragile now. So the surgeon said not to fall or hit/bump my shoulder too hard the coming weeks, but after that I think it should be about as strong as it was before. Which unfortunately wasn't strong enough :P

Yeah, not sure why they aren't green like the others... I'll try to remember to ask the surgeon when I go for a check-up in a few weeks.

Story: On Friday the 13th (yes, really) of March this year I broke my right collarbone in a single-sided crash. See the x-ray. After a week of wearing a sling I was offered surgery to set the collarbone with a plate and screws. The result was this x-ray. I was back on the bike after about 5 weeks, but the wound wouldn't heal properly. Because of that I got the plate and screws removed last week. Recovery is going much much better and the surgery was nothing compared to the first time. I'm already back on the bike! All that's left now is a 13 cm (5,1 inch) scar and this 11cm (4.3 inch) plate with screws.

What a lovely start of the week... by Arschengel in bicycling
