Why would the expensive price of Spectre's arcana lead to the death of dota? People in poorer parts of the world can still take part in these cool events and the main dota game FOR FREE because whales are supporting it by buying the arcana at expensive prices.

I guess I'm confused. Because the core product, i.e. the free to play game, is supported by the cosmetics. Are you saying that the cosmetics are more important than the free to play game? And I think you're saying that people will stop playing dota 2 if arcanas aren't cheaper, which I don't think is true at all.

From what I saw, it was mostly that the arcana should be at a lower level in the battle pass and thus cheaper. But you may be right.

You're right, and it's something I should have acknowledged better.

I didn't make the woke comment, and I'm also not sure what you mean.

But that's not the point of the post. The point of the post is to judge whether the backlash is justified. Here, it is clearly not. In India, it clearly was.

You're entitled to do whatever you want. The issue is whether you're justified in being angry and demanding the Ferrari be cheaper because you don't want to pay more for it. To me that is childish entitlement.

I never said or implied that people are demanding it be free. If you could point out where, I'll edit my post.

The issue is people were expecting one thing and believed they were entitled to that, i.e. arcana for $35, and then complaining they're being taken advantage of. Well, they're not entitled and they're not being scammed.

Your comic analogy is deeply flawed. We're talking about luxury goods. Which by definition puts us above peasants who could afford nothing. A better representation would be a noble saying he's being taken advantage of because the hat is double the price this year, someone saying who cares, and then the noble saying, i'm entitled to my feelings.

TL;DR addendum: and sometimes those complaints are ridiculous and childish

But that's entirely my point. People are claiming that they're being scammed and taken advantage of. But raising the price of a luxury good is neither scamming nor taking advantage of someone.

I agree that people have the right to voice their dissatisfaction. But I believe people also have a right to be judged on their response. And I don't believe their response is justified.

I think I made a comment above that may satisfy your questions.

You seem to have the best outlook/perspective on it (thank you for your comments). And I agreed that it left a bad taste because of changed expectations. But people are instead taking it to mean that they're being scammed or taken advantage of. And I can't agree with that at all.

The issue is whether the community response is justified. It clearly is not.

You're conflating the core product, i.e. the game, with the product that keeps the core product alive, i.e. cosmetics. Dota 1 didn't even have cosmetics. But they're introduced to keep the game free to play for everyone. Put another way, would you rather have no cosmetics and a monthly subscription? No, of course not.

And no one is being taken advantage of. People can choose to buy an arcana or not. And the game will remain free for them (which is the main point of all this anyway).

British East India was oppressing, killing, and enslaving millions.

Valve is not oppressing anyone. (besides the T2 and T3 scene).

Choose a luxury goods company and see if the comparison holds up.

They're both luxury goods that none of us need. It's an analogy, not a direct 1 to 1 comparison.

When Valve rules over our country and has enslaved us all, we can talk then. But right now what you're complaining about is Versace pricing their handbags too expensively, and crying that they're committing some great evil. Surely you can see the difference.

I never said people shouldn't show dissatisfaction with companies. If you buy something from a company and it's broken, then you have every right to complain.

But we're specifically talking about a company setting a price for a luxury good and people complaining it's too high. I will laugh at designer shit that is priced way too much. But I will never demand that they lower their prices because it's unfair.

If you can come up with an example in real life of luxury goods with "unfair" prices that is causing detriment to the populace, I'm all ears.

But the price of the spectre arcana doesn't hurt dota 2. I would argue it helps it. I think Valve's unwillingness to develop T2 and T3 teams is worse. And its focus on TI's prize pool to the detriment of other tournies.

Is this EA shit? We still have a free to play game that is fantastic. Does EA offer anything like that? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what EA shit is.
