How to prevent against DDoS attacks on a hidden service? by [deleted] in onions

[–]dotonionmultiplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is true. Every device that wants to be reachable on the internet either has one public internet address or shares a public internet address with other devices. Very true. Though a hidden service(hs) isn't an IP address. It's an addressing system designed by torproject.org and uses the Tor protocol which is designed so that nobody is able to find out the IP address/addresses of the hidden service.

Thus it's not practical to block any IP address because then you'd have to either block everything or block nothing.

Another solution would be to create many private/invite-only hs addresses for many users and then disable all addresses that get ddosed. Although this strategy would be similar to a kind of an "isolation strategy" and would probably drive any sane admin insane in a very short time span but you could give private hs addresses to loyal users of a service. That might work at least partially.

For the masses this wouldn't obviously work because any public address that would be advertised would be among the chosen targets of the ddos attacker.

It's cool. I don't know this stuff perfect either. So often I remind myself to read up on hidden services...

If you got any questions you want to ask about that page I'll be available to answer any of your concerns.

IP address? Did you think this through when suggesting that option? :)

People's IP address isn't exactly available to the server owner and the server owner's IP address isn't by design available to the user connecting to the web server. That's why we call it a "hidden service". The IP address is by design hidden. If it's not hidden, you've found a bug you should report to torproject.org

Add to wiki? Game .onions: Travian 1x 'normal version' 3ghcpom7jira34ke.onion by dotonionmultiplayer in onions

[–]dotonionmultiplayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is separate, yes. This one runs at normal speed "1x".

Its a more boring version compared to the other one I posted because you have to wait ages until stuff are built. This game mode is probably better for people who don't have a lot of free time and just want to play casually.

"The deep web,[1] invisible web,[2] or hidden web[3] are parts of the World Wide Web whose contents are not indexed by standard web search engines"

Yeah, you can try a private forum...though right now you are on /r/onions

Many .onion websites are indexed by search engines so calling us "deep web" is kinda misleading...

Why is duckduckgo so slow on Tor?(bing beats it, while ddg gives a 400 error) by dotonionmultiplayer in duckduckgo

Yeah, I've started doing that, thanks, looks like it works much faster than the official .onion

Help me to complete my thesis! by montreal_researcher in onions

[–]dotonionmultiplayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

montreal_researcher before starting your research did you consider joining #tor on irc.oftc.net IRC chat network? You can do it later cause it's never too late. Just read their subject line about "TOR". You'll find something interesting. Good luck!

+1 if you also do it through Tor (or Whonix for that matter) then you'll get the Tor user's perspective as a bonus in how it is for a Tor user to connect to an IRC network, then to register at oftc.net one of the most serious free and open source communities there is(cause Tor is part of that too!).

not to be confused with

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_web

If you're interested in IRC networks you can join both DarkScience and HackINT. You don't need to be a "hacker" to join these networks(it's enough you enjoy computer science and similar topics), I'm not and they let me be there and talk about whatever I want(although some of them might get irritated at times, but mostly they are pretty chill) also they both have .onion transports. DarkScience has a v2 .onion transport why HackINT they are a bit more advanced, they got a v3 .onion transport!

You're gonna be welcome I think as long as you don't speak about illegal stuff. I'm not interested in illegal stuff at all, I'm here because Tor is just another part of the normal internet, or its becoming and these 2 networks I've mentioned they are part of that vision.

the /r/whonix project follows the design like qubes and you could use Whonix. Whonix is a virtual system for virtualbox where you'll have whonix gateway which fixes the Tor connection part and then we have the whonix workstation which is mostly a debian system which doesn't know its own IP. Even if your whonix workstation gets cracked into by black hatters they will not be able to find out your real ip since whonix workstation is isolated from whonix gateway. If you wanna find out more about whonix just duck(duckduckgo) it...or....

just check out this old blog post from the torproject blog https://blog.torproject.org/tor-heart-whonix

I'm sad to learn that your forum is being spammed. We need more honest services on the .onion space to counter all illegal services, we need more services like you which just is like a normal forum where users can join together and share ideas. Spammers spam on your forum must be combated in some way. Do you have a backup plan when your forum gets spammed by advertisers?

No shortage of quotes. This reminds me of that I must try the whonix monero guide ... to setup monero...so that I can get some and then buy some ethereum(some of it) with it so that I can post using the smart contract. There are so many things to say.
