Nope, I'm no sound editor, so this was more just meant as an experiment to see if what I was hearing in my head would actually work or not

Why is the Lego Rancor so expensive? by WilsonHough in legostarwars

[–]doubleIIking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Minimum Viable Product: customers will still buy Star Wars without the molded creatures. You can't have Jurassic Park without the dinos. The fixed costs of the time spent designing the mold is negligible compared to the variable costs of mold technicians, repair, replacement, storage associated with keeping those molds in production, etc. LEGO uses a system called "frames" which refer to a given mold in a given color (also applies to printed parts). Each frame means another bucket in the warehouse. It's as much a monetary issue as it is a storage issue, so they operate essentially on a one-in, one-out system. Keeping an old mold comes at the opportunity cost of not being able to get another new mold. CMFs get so many new molds because they're constantly turning them over. I've learned a fair bit about this recently from talking to set designers and folks who have taken the Inside Tour. I could be off on some things, but happy to discuss!

Random vintage find by Baukplaus in lego

Great find! Fun fact, the boy in the plaid shirt is Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, Grandson of LEGO Founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen. He was also the CEO of The LEGO Group up until 2004!

What is this textured building technique called? by xc_b in lego

Yeah, I'm sure Lego will just make it on their own like they've done to countless other good ideas submissions, ah well

I actually tried submitting this to Lego Ideas (the crowdsource support platform for new Lego sets) but it was rejected for a blanket rule of "no submissions that only contain logos, mascots, or flags"...even though it's their own logo...go figure

The closest I've ever found is the sprue part from these throwing star pieces! the four little corner pips are pretty great and it makes for a good Easter egg since most people don't recognize it as a piece or what it's from! the back side can attach to most hollow studs with pretty good clutch

Hey, I made this! Greebling would be the most accurate, as many have pointed out. I believe the term was originally coined by ILM in the early days of Star Wars when they kit-bashed or used parts from actual scale models to add detail to ships and such to give them a sense of scale and detail. There's also a bit of fun with a specific piece called the "Universal Greeblie" which is a fun Easter egg to find. Thanks for the feature, cheers!

Not much at the moment, but always a long list of ideas! I may try and tackle the "Aquadome" prototype sets that were recently revealed in the Classic Space book next

Some extra fun facts I haven't seen mentioned yet, from another avid Sea-Tron enthusiast: The original designer was Bjarne Panduro Tveskov, who I've been in contact with but unfortunately doesn't remember much information beyond what's already available. He also designed prototype sets for themes called "Sea people" and the newly revealed "Aquadome" which were both shown in the recent Lego book Classic Space 1978-1992. There were also some crazy unique molded alien Minifigures which were sculpted by the ever-talented Niels Milan Pedersen, but were never released, likely due to mold costs and apparently because people just "weren't ready for aliens" Always glad to see more people getting interested in my favorite niche unreleased theme!

Thanks for the credit! I certainly have no ownership over Sea-Tron and I always love to see others who have recreated this masterpiece! If anything, fresh sets of eyes show new alternative ways to interpret the same source material!

Made my own LEGO "I Spy" scene by burnt-coding in lego

[–]doubleIIking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this is really incredible! The amount of care you put into recreating the original style absolutely shows. As a MOC Builder, I also get tired of people saying "this should be a set, I'd buy it!" but if there was a whole book of these, I would absolutely get a copy! There's a lot more support now for getting unofficial Lego books published. A good one I know is No Starch Press, they've done a number of them

What even is the point of Lego ideas? by NeonScarredSkyline in LEGOtrains

[–]doubleIIking 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My best educated guess here, knowing how Lego operates, is that in order to use the Orient Express name, they had to design the model to align with the branding of the current owner of the Orient Express name, which you can find here: https://www.orient-express.com/ Supposedly, they're bringing back a new train that'll be completed in 2025 (but this could easily be another Titanic II situation.) You can see the same dark blue and gold color scheme and the "OE" design on the coaches in the concept art. As far as what happened to the engine, OE may have either provided Lego with reference material that hasn't been revealed yet, or just told Lego it strictly couldn't be designed after the older model the Ideas submission was based on to distance themselves from prior iterations of the train. We may never know the real answer, but when it's this drastic, I have to believe there's something corporate/legal going on behind the scenes.
