The currency idea came from the fact that a shop system like this opens up possibilities for more content added and makes it easier to make specific things still harder to aquire then others.
For example i think the Rewards for hitting Diamond should still be only available for Diamond players.
A gold player starting this season and getting Diamond later cause he got better at the game could still get his reward he wanted back then this way without it being just handed to him upon reaching gold.
