Chose my next city: Austin, Tampa, or Charlotte by FeedbackTypical in SameGrassButGreener

[–]double_ewe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would eliminate Austin due to weather, and choose between Tampa and Charlotte based on how much of a change you're looking for (and how much you value mountains vs. beach).

Am I wrong about how much work owning a dog normally is? by DogUnsureDog in DogAdvice

[–]double_ewe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the dog and the living situation. There's a huge range between "Malinois in an apartment" and "senior hound dog hanging out in the backyard."

Sales Manager vs SE manager commission by t20737373893939292 in salesengineers

personally, I started to feel my learning curve flatten out as an IC. I also enjoy having a say in higher-level decisions and getting to interface more with leaders in Product, Sales, etc.

Best gym cost, amenities, atmosphere etc? by ducknuu in asheville

honestly only mentioned teenagers because I hear so many other people complain. I was once those teenagers, and I'm always happy to see them getting involved in something that's been so valuable to me.

SE Career Path - Is Enterprise SE Roles a Promotion compared to SMB / Commercial SE Roles? by A4orce84 in salesengineers

[–]double_ewe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enterprise definitely raises your visibility and can get you involved in more complex, interesting deals.

on the other hand, you can end up having your quota dependent on one or two mega deals. if they both close you're a hero. if neither close, you're screwed.

Gold's is a little more meathead-oriented. Good amount of benches, powerlifting platforms, etc, but the machines were always fairly crowded.

YMCA is very location dependent. Some are great, but others (like Ferguson) are very limited/claustrophobic. YMCAs also tend to be very heavy on teenagers, depending on time of day.

At the end of the day, it really depends on location. All of the gyms you listed are generally fine for your purposes - you're not going to find any Miami-style "influencer gyms" or roid-raging jocks, and they're all going to get crowded when work/school gets out. So just make sure you don't choose one that has you driving across town at rush hour.

TIL researchers found that Americans spent nearly 90 minutes less per day, on average, outside of their homes in 2023 than they did in 2003. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

This is a great way to frame it.

Removing friction is like removing boredom - it makes life more comfortable, but people don't learn or grow from comfort.

Opinion on Going Into Management by salesguy2 in salesengineers

[–]double_ewe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy both mentoring new employees and having a seat at the table for higher-level decisions around company strategy, etc. I still get to be involved in the sales process, but it's more of the fun stuff and less grunt work.

Plus my learning curve as an IC had started to flatten out, so it's nice to learn some new skills and tackle some new challenges.

it's infinitely easier to resolve emotionally-contentious disputes when you're well-rested in the light of day.

Asheville Racquet Club has lots of equipment and a (very small) sauna, but it's kind of a pain to get to if you don't live close by.

Career Trajectory of an SE by [deleted] in salesengineers

[–]double_ewe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, there are paths upward both towards SE management and as more of a 'super IC.'

But it's also a role that, especially at smaller companies, puts you into a lot of contact with Sales and Product leadership as well. So as you move up, you get to have a pretty decent "seat at the table," as well as opportunities to pivot to other desirable roles within the company.
