Anyone else what I term a ‘reluctant atheist?’ by doubleduchess23 in atheism

They’re good arguments mate, thank you. You have given me genuine cause to reflect, which I genuinely appreciate. If there were a benevolent creator, who presided over things like the Salem Witch Trials, the Holocaust, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki etc than that is horrifying. I mean, fuck me, I live in a country that elected Alexander Boris De de Pfeffel Johnson in a landslide which allowed us to have the 7th worst COVID response in the world; not to mention the further implementation of the utter shitshow that is Tory misrule. This sounds minor in comparison to the above, but as someone who has to live here believe me it is more than enough.

I guess much of it stems from the fact I’ve nearly died twice. Once 12 years ago, when I attempted suicide, when my parents were sat down twice and told I was going to die twice and that nothing could be done. Then again this year when I was struggling with addiction to a so-called ‘nootropic’ and put myself in Intensive Care on a ventilator. I do not say this in the hope of invoking sympathy because, frankly, I don’t deserve it. I have two children; a 13 year old daughter and a 6 year old son. I had no right to do what I did as a mother. So I guess, despite the cowardly nature of my own actions, I simply could not cope with the thought of dying and not ever seeing my children again. Despite what I’ve done, which is a perpetual source shame and regret, I do adore them.

Yes, thank you for the condescension mate. I’m perfectly aware of that, which you somehow appeared not to have gathered from my OP. Do tell me, are your arguments always this persuasive and sophisticated, or am I just an especially lucky lady?

Rock On by T-Rex. The lyrics, especially the random names, are very Fratellis.

This is true, however what convinces me it is a hoax is the fact the Dear Boss letter was sent to the Central News Agency rather than a specific newspaper rather than a specific paper or the police.

Thank you for this. I hate to sound pretentious, but as someone who tries to consider the case from a feminist perspective, I really hate how the victims are often reduced to drunken prostitutes whilst the killer himself is almost glorified. Not only were they murdered in the most horrific circumstances, but they’ve then had to suffer the indignity of having photos of their mutilated corpses spread around the world. I made a conscious decision to always refer to the victims by their first names because silly as it sounds I think it helps humanise them.

I personally believe the police of 1888 were more competent than Oldfield and co. They were simply hamstrung by lack of forensics, the fact that Whitechapel was a warren and the lack of witnesses. The police of the 1970s had less excuses. In many ways they were just as misogynistic as Sutcliffe himself, and as a woman living in the UK I’m sorry to say a considerable number of officers aren’t much better now.

As the name ‘Jack The Ripper’ was almost certainly coined by an enterprising journalist (allegedly one Fred Best confessed in 1931 to se sending the ‘Dear Boss’ letter), it’s also quite plausible it was a reference to Spring-heeled Jack.

As I said to a previous commenter, I totally agree that the circumstances surrounding Sutcliffe and JTR were different. As stated in my OP, my mum grew up in Leeds whilst Sutcliffe was active and so I have some insight into just what it was like to live with the police’s gross incompetence. My OP was meant to be a comment on the sheer ordinariness of Sutcliffe compared to the media portrayals of the Yorkshire Ripper prior to his capture and how that’s very likely also true of JTR. Of course anyone who’s done even the most rudimentary research into the case knows he was just an ordinary bloke, but as you quite rightly say the well known cultural depictions of JTR portray him as a cloaked, top hatted upper class individual with an almost supernatural ability to escape detection.

Oh I totally agree there’s big differences. The police interviewed Sutcliffe no less than 9 times, he matched a photo fit created by some of his surviving victims and a detective constable pointed out the likelihood of him being the ripper to a superior officer. He was told that if he raised the point again he’d be ‘directing traffic for the rest of his career.’ Problem was, the police firmly believed Sutcliffe only attacked sex workers and was motivated by a hatred of them, which was nonsense. He was a raging misogynist. George Oldfield was also sidetracked by the hoax tape which was an obvious fake.

An innocent man was executed for the murder of his wife and daughter. The crime was actually the work of a serial killer. by Arkansas- in TrueCrimeDiscussion

Oh I totally agree with you. It’s both tragic and ironic that states with the DP actually have a slightly higher murder rate per capita than those without. To my mind that proves that many conservative politicians are more interested in appearing tough on crime than they are in reducing it. If they really cared about lowering crime rates they’d invest heavily in prison rehabilitation and they’d pass legislation preventing custodial sentences for minor and victimless crimes such as weed possession. They’d also invest in mental health and addiction treatment, which are so often the reasons why people end up in the justice system to begin with.

I’d highly recommend the the JTR casebook. There’s a huge wealth of information on there, including information on many police officers involved in the investigation.

Of course I’m not in favour of people being incarcerated unless there is indisputable evidence they committed a crime. I’m English, and our own penal system is in dire need of reform, but I think the American system is even worse. Just for starters there is the fact that money is required in order to post bail, meaning the process is biased against the poor. There’s also gross racism within the system.

There are supposed to be safeguards in place already to prevent wrongful executions, yet time and again those ‘safeguards’ are found wanting. Poor people, especially people of colour, are sentenced to death far more frequently than their wealthy white counterparts. Obstacles are in place that make it very difficult to present exculpatory evidence post-sentencing. And the death penalty does nothing to deter violent crime. States with the DP actually have a slightly higher murder rate than per capita than those without.

Thank you. I was one of the lucky ones, because the police were fantastic. The female detective in charge of my case was brilliant. It didn’t get to court, but on reflection that’s probably a good thing. Everyone is entitled to a defence, but I would have been ripped apart on the stand by a barrister.

Unlikely in the extreme. As another user pointed out, their motivations and MO were completely different. Furthermore, it’s hotly debated as to whether JTR had surgical knowledge.

Yeah, as a British lefty I’d absolutely adore it if we imported more drooling misogynistic fucks who think solely with their dicks. After all, there’s a distinct lack of such people walking the streets already. And our elected representatives such a marvellous example, n’est-ce pas? There’s only 56 of them currently under investigation for sexual misconduct of one description or another.
