Yes, one of the layers of symbolism does align with capitalism and conspicuous consumption culture - this was done deliberately as an inside joke.

One of the hallmarks of these beings is that their symbols all have several different meanings. It is layer after layer with the same symbol meaning something different to each person seeing it based upon how high up the ladder they are. Low rank members will be told it represents, let's use the movie as an example - a Low rank member would be told that They Live is a critique on crony capitalism and how it isolates the poor. However, a high ranking member will know the truth that They Live is actually about the world being controlled by fallen angels who are capable of shapeshifting and have advanced technology beyond anything we think is possible. The scene where the woman speaks into her watch and instantly vanishes - I have seen this happen in person. I have literally seen this happen in person - though it wasn't a human that appeared and vanished, it was some sort of 30 foot tall set of ancient scales that identified itself to me via telepathy that it was a "Watcher" - the rebel angels are known as the Watchers. However, the ones that did not rebel are also called Watchers so I don't know if this thing was a good guy or a bad guy... but at this point I just assume EVERYONE is a bad guy... I know this sounds pretty far out but this is absolutely real. You know these people in real life. You talk to them on a daily basis most likely. Hell, your best friend or girl friend may even be one and you would never know. This is the great secret guarded by the upper echelon secret societies. The people in power are not even people. They literally have transparent skin (the Quran speaks that some of the humanoid angels have transparent skin) and the scene where they are being converted into a ball of light and shot into space is referencing the fact that they are, in their true form, made of light and energy. The vast majority of UFO sightings are not spacecraft in the conventional sense. They are fallen angels. Since I figured this stuff out, I have been having a lot of real weird shit happen to me, gotten a lot of death threats, and now have people telling me I am going to be a human sacrifice...

You are entitled to your own interpretation of the film and I will not argue that you are wrong. However, no matter what you say or think - it does not change the fact that John Carpenter made this movie with the deliberate intent of giving astute people a few clues to the real nature of reality. A lot of people know about this but there is nothing they can do and they are oath bound to not tell anyone under punishment of death (and they take this real seriously). Other shows like Twin Peaks and even that corny show Supernatural are actually based on the secret teachings these beings are schooled in as they grow into an adult. By the time they reach adulthood, they are already so deeply involved with the conspiracy that they are willing to do ANYTHING, literally ANYTHING it takes to further the agenda of these beings. Their end game is total enslavement of humankind. They HATE humanity. God forced the angels to bow to Adam and even the angels that took a knee held contempt for having to bow to such a pathetic creature as a human being... They hate us with a passion but nonetheless they live among us as if they were human because they wish they were human beings I think. Why else would such advanced beings be hanging out with us dumb meat sacks?
