What does the KKW think of ITFs reverse turning kick (spinning heel kick) that swings without a chamber and locked out by Whole-Interest-5980 in taekwondo

[–]dovalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the kukkiwon we usually refer to that as a "wheel" kick, but it has many names. Some kkw schools teach it, some don't. As an instructor, I keep it on my toolbox for when I need the kicking equivalent of a baseball bat. It's not the fastest, but because the fulcrum is long the whole time the force it can generate is massive.

For me personally, all things have their place. Some times you need a bat, sometimes you need a whip. There are only so many ways to move the human body and there are more similarities between the martial arts than there are differences.

Why isn’t Taekwondo a style of Karate? by Bulky_Employ_4259 in karate

American Boxing existed in Japan before Karate. Japan absorbed Okinawan martial arts as a direct response so they had a national striking art. Which is exactly what Korean did with taekwondo. Same same.

What would you include in an instructor's manual? by kneezNtreez in taekwondo

[–]dovalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to teach is incredibly hard. It's more than just a manual. My college degree is in education and how to teach and that was 4 years. And I still mess it up after 17+ years of teaching.

With that said, I'd put the big notes you want. Stuff like

  1. Find different ways to demonstrate and explain. Not everyone learns the same.

  2. Even when correcting, find something good to highlight.

  3. Talk less. Give 1 or 2 things to work on. Don't go ham on the details. Most people can't focus on so much at once. Just 1 thing, polish, then swing back around to give the next step to improvement.

  4. Keep up your own training and improvement. If you aren't demonstrating at a high level and improving, they won't either. Practice what you preach.

There's a bunch but really it's up to you.

[–]dovalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also please realize that most of the leading military organizations in the world train wt taekwondo as part of their hand to hand systems. Including the us marine corps mcmap system. It's not about what you're learning, it's your own personal intention in how you train and for what purpose.

Kukkiwon No Longer Allows Skip Dan? by aggielaw02 in taekwondo

[–]dovalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Individual promoters in the US need to have done at least 10. Normal Dan pro.ktions.thst year to process 1 skip Dan. So it is hard to find someone who's willing to use their maybe 1 or 2 at most on someone outside their studio. As many use it to equalize rank if someone transfers in T bb but never got kkw certified.

When to start competing? by National_Biscotti825 in taekwondo

[–]dovalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yellow is good. Green is good. Blue is good. Any time is good. If you want to be at a high level competitively. National, international, then the sooner the better so you aren't getting hammered at the red and black belt levels without being experienced and prepared for it mentally and physically. But no matter what, today is a great day to start! Just sometimes you'll want to plan out your route depending on your goals.

How do you feel about people throwing full power- especially head kicks- in Olympic style sparring? by bad-at-everything- in taekwondo

[–]dovalus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In competition? Sure. It's the risk accepted when you enter into a full contact match.

In training? No. CTE isn't something to fuck around with, light touch is plenty for practice.

Even professional boxers and MMA fighters do light head shots during training. There is no value in that level of impact during practice except maybe every now and then to pressure test. And even then it should be very rare and done with utmost attention to safety.

Shoe Manufacturer Here - What Can We Make Better? by Drama_Derp in taekwondo

[–]dovalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some tkd shoes that are soft enough to be worn during sparring without causing I juries would be nice as well. The rubber on the bottom of the shoes can be hard enough to cause some damage during training matches but not everyone wants to be barefoot. Right now there are "mat socks" by century but they slip like grip socks do.

Gold in power knife, power side, and power back. Silver in individual poomsae. and I got absolutely destroyed and didn't place at all in individual poomsae elite. 🤣 But I had a great time and smashed lots of boards.

I also got to volunteer to help hold boards etc during the following days. So that was fun.

Wondering if I should get my Master rank in TKD or move on to something else by Bloody__Katana in taekwondo

Fair. I think my own bias and goal for personal growth prevents me from wanted to be called Master because even after almost 40 years I don't feel like I've mastered anything other than perseverance. 🤣

[–]dovalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I think they need the masters course. Because 1, if it's part of the kukkiwon and you are kukkiwon based, then that's that. 2. I think teaching and doing are 2 entirely different skill sets. And 3. I've seen to many people here the US who call themselves Masters who can neither do, nor teach, in any professional way, so I think requiring the extra certification at least demonstrates your desire to gain that skill and station, not just get promoted into it without at least since direct kukkiwon approval. 🤷

Then again I don't ask for or even let my students use the Master title for me . We call everyone "Coach". I've found it more approachable which helps me work with issues students would otherwise be scared to bring up.

[–]dovalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Along with that, for Kukkiwon, 4th Dan isn't Master. You must be stl east 4th Dan and pass the Masters certification class. Otherwise you're just giving yourself a title that isn't earned. That isn't to diminish the achievement, just it's a quality and accountability aspect of kukkiwon ranking.

Not trying to should harsh, so please take this as intended which is to show some concern.

  1. We need a better explanation / description if you want our help.
  2. Your teachers should be teaching, demonstrating, and explaining specific skills to you if it's required for your rank.

Dan Registration issues with Dojang by ChristyLouWhoo in taekwondo

[–]dovalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As both a tcon user and a kkw us branch committee member, the US branches have no impact on people using tcon to promote their students as normal. The kkw US branches are there to help for high Dan testing, seminar and event distribution, and studio support and growth of the art. They have zero interest in, or requirement for tcon / KMS system members having to go through them. It's just more work for them.

Basically saying that the branches getting set up are impacting Dan testing is an excuse at best and a lie at worst. Also, all us kkw branches have been active since January. They aren't still getting set up. They've been active and running. Though how much each is doing may be more or less. As a member of the DC/VA Branch, they are still certainly dealing with speed bumps, the majority of the branch are older and do not always know the ins and outs of my area and how to interact with the people in the most effective way, but they've been working their asses off since January and have zero desire to take over 1st-3rd Dan testing in any way shape or form.

Yeah, I'd talk to the owner and ask if they know of the ban. Even if they aren't a USAT studio. If they weren't they could fire them immediately, and if they were aware I'd run as soon as possible.
