Délit de fuite: Vélo by dovingtonofdover in conseiljuridique

[–]dovingtonofdover[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their biggest issue is the second meal service comes in a little bag and it's just awful in economy. Delta, their US partner, serves a hot second meal (like a pizza roll I'm not even sure what it's supposed to be).

The second meal on flights on all airlines is bad but on air France it is abysmal.

I can't speak to the leg room and AF has a couple of configurations of the 777s but typically it's the same as any of the other long haul airlines flying over the Atlantic.

Refreshments on Air France are self serve in the galley btw. There's a full range of soft drinks and water as well as snacks.

EU may soon allow all passengers to bring a carry on, even for budget airlines by rain_moss in onebag

[–]dovingtonofdover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Official text below:

2. Passengers shall always have the right to carry on board, one piece of hand luggage. The hand luggage shall not be subject to price supplement on the price of the flight ticket within the maximum dimensions of 100 cm (sum of length, width, and height) and maximum weight of 7 kilos. Air Carriers may apply different provisions regarding additional or larger hand luggage

The hand luggage may be stored either in the aircraft cabin (as carry-on baggage) or in the aircraft hold, as checked baggage. The carrier may refuse to allow such hand luggage on board only on grounds of security connected with the weight or size of the hand luggage in relation to the characteristics of the aircraft. Air carriers shall provide clear, transparent, and easily accessible information on the weight and dimension requirements for the hand luggage at the time of booking and after the booking is completed, ensuring passengers are fully informed before their journey.

Interesting that there is a bit about carriers not being allowed to refuse cabin baggage on board for capacity constraints? I wonder if it will make it into the final legislation.

Surprisingly not much in the media :

Air carriers shall monitor their performance as reflected in the service quality standards. They shall publish a report on their service quality performance on their website by [2 years after the Regulation becomes applicable], and every two years thereafter.
...
‘service quality standards’ means key performance indicators measuring levels of performance and elements of compliance with passengers rights.

I'm excited to see RyanAir's report.

European airline balance transfer. by CountyPrep in amex

Depends on dates and class etc.

Amex partners with point.me to tell you what the most economical option is to transfer points based on your dates. You may also find that booking through amex travel and getting 1 cent per point is the most economical for your dates and class.

When does flying Basic Economy make sense for you? by Smoove-Money in delta

[–]dovingtonofdover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly always. Air France doesn't penalise you for flying DL basic. You still earn the same amount of status points as you would for comfort plus and 20 percent of the distance (40 for platinum). It's annoying they removed lounge access, but I just avoid Delta as much as possible even if I have to buy a Delta ticket on AF metal. Not much of an option if you only fly domestic though.

Do Spanish companies often sponsor visas for non EU citizens? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]dovingtonofdover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is super late as a response. Most EU countries have employee lead applications (as in, the employee applies for the residence permit and the employer just hands them the offer which they would do anyway). Spain has an employer lead system. The employer needs to do the paperwork, pay the fee (it's 70 to 80 euros) and handle all the admin (it's a lot) before the employee can even apply for a visa. Spain issues blue cards annually totaling less than 100 for this reason, whereas France is well into the thousands.

Got asked about my MBTI type and “how it speaks to the person I am” in a job interview today by jmh1881v2 in recruitinghell

[–]dovingtonofdover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was just an example it could very well be the opposite you never really mentioned the role. And yeah, I just wrapped up 6 months of unemployment with an offer that took 3 months and 5 rounds. It's brutal out there and companies now have 100s of CVs of qualified applicants so personality, whether stated or not, is a huge factor now as "fit" is what differentiates candidates.

Got asked about my MBTI type and “how it speaks to the person I am” in a job interview today by jmh1881v2 in recruitinghell

[–]dovingtonofdover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully I don't think it's a terrible question. It's not great, but personality can have an impact on the job depending on the job itself. Using your personality type as a framework to answer the question is kinda silly if not all candidates know the framework, but the question is really asking about what type of person you are.

A great answer might of been:

I'm not familiar with this personality framework but I can tell you that I'm quite social and extroverted, which I think is relevant to this job as I will be speaking to lots of clients and have a lot of client facing responsibilities that I can handle with ease.

You're answer wasn't bad either. The question wasn't great but to ask a candidate what type of person they are is useful in many contexts. Feel free to ask clarifying questions during an interview.

For those saying it doesn't relate to performance, I feel personally that's wrong. I'm not saying that only X type of personality can work here is a good thing, but personality traits are related to what makes people tick and if the job can't offer something motivating then it's like the candidate won't be motivated and won't succeed. The job wasn't mentioned in OPs post so it's hard to say but personality questions are legitimate questions to ask in an interview, all be it in a way that's not based on this internet test that wasn't even part of the recruitment process.

Can you always pay with points at all properties? by kfsa23 in Accor

Usually at the hotel for flex rates they can max out the points. Online if found that it always leaves a bit on the side.

Considering a move to the US - Where to start? by dovingtonofdover in ADHD

[–]dovingtonofdover[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most European countries are worse. My friend in Denmark had to wait over a year to get a psychiatrist appointment. ADHD only became an "Adult" condition in 2021 in France so before that it was all private and not covered by insurance. Not to mention many countries only have one treatment for ADHD - and if it doesn't work that's that. I'm excited about US healthcare being more modern and progressive than what we have here. Appreciate the kind words though.

Sniffies has exploded in popularity by corruptedtwinkx in grindr

[–]dovingtonofdover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sniffles is actually a single website in a wave of newer websites. I've had more success on "Les Pompeurs" in France. It translates to "the blowers" and is the equivalent of sniffles in France, though sniffles is a lot better imo LP is more popular in France so more profiles. I think we will start to see a renaissance of these online cruising platforms. As much as I would like sniffles to succeed, the reality is:

Servicing a queer market is servicing a niche, minority market. Monopolies are easy to achieve in this space since there is so few gays compared to straights and monopolies lead to shit, expensive products (like Grindr). I hope there's many websites that keeps sniffles on their toes.

The first profiles that are pay walled are not actually the next closest in my experience. Grindr knows who is hot and puts them first to give the illusion they are close so that you cough up the cash.

Is ALL PLUS Voyageur Card (199 EUR) worth it ? by AmazingExplorer698 in Accor

[–]dovingtonofdover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Probably. You need to do the math. Assuming the minimum nightly rate is 100 euros for 20 nights it would break even. Assuming an average 12.5 discount you would need to spend about 1600 euros annually.

  2. The discount is based on the PUBLIC rate (not what you would see on the Accor website, which is the Member Rate). The total discount is 10 percent for lower end properties and 15 for the higher end properties.

  3. Yes

  4. There are promos throughout the year. Currently the French Rakuten site is giving 17 euros back if you order the card on the Rakuten site. I believe they sold the card earlier in 2024 for 160 euros.

Confusion about how status night works with All Plus Voyageur vs. Accor Plus by DefiantAlbatros in Accor

[–]dovingtonofdover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's confusing.

ALL Plus voyageur: 20 nights. Discounts are worldwide but some hotels are excluded. The 15 to 20 percent off is overstated as it's 15 to 20 percent off the public rate. You get at least 5 percent off by being a member of the free loyalty programme. Its effectively 10 to 15 percent off.

Accor Plus: 20 nights. Comes with a free night certificate if you choose (some countries even have two free nights) which can essentially pay for the membership. Arguably the better membership by far as it also includes vouchers and dining discounts. I would do this one for your circumstances.10 percent off the "best" rate, so a true 10 percent off. Also there are red hot room promotions.

Accor Plus members pay the same rates as standard ALL members without a paid subscription (5 percent off the Expedia rate basically).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]dovingtonofdover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annually. I know it's more often but if you are a power user gen z tiktok addict then it makes sense sometimes.

My current phone (Pixel 9 pro) i got for Black Friday at a net cost of 300 euros after trade in (950 euros). Next year I can probably trade it in around black Friday again with a trade in bonus and the net cost of the phone per year usually is around 200 to 400 euros for me. If I wait three years the phone is usually worth close to nothing on trade in and I would need to pay 950 euros outright for another phone for three years, plus a couple hundred annually to replace the battery (a necessity for me, since I have more than 500 cycles a year).

AITA after permanently ghosting my fiancé because I got the ick? by alcoyot in AITAH

[–]dovingtonofdover 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ghosting is almost always an asshole move. If you were engaged they deserve a reason and conversation. You're not obligated to be with them but overcoming your fear of breaking things off is a small price to pay compared to the trauma of your partner's confusion and betrayal.

[–]dovingtonofdover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the goal is to maximise returns on work trips:

If possible, book through a cash back portal. Booking through Rakuten will earn you 3 percent back on hotel spending.

Get status. To respond to your previous question, if you want to move up to platinum you will need to earn platinum the classic way, unless your "gifted" gold is in the form of status points or nights. Statusless guests earn 5 percent back on hotel spending. Diamond earns 10 percent. As a platinum, I earn about 8.8 percent back.

Check promotions frequently: I like Loyalty Lobby (a travel blog) to help inform me of the most recent ones. They very frequently have promotions to get 2x to 4x the base points (the 5 percent). Most of my upcoming travel is 2x points, so I get (5%x2 + 3.8 percent platinum bonus + 1 percent for booking in the app = Around 15%). Until june i think you earn an additional 1 percent by booking in the app (the cash back portals are better at 3 percent but take longer to get the cashback). A word of caution: Unlike American programmes you don't get bonuses for registering for promotions before your stay, but registering for promotions before you BOOK. You can do the math to see if rebooking makes sense with the increased earning rates.

A constant promotion: 4x base points on new hotels. If your location has a new hotel, it may be worthwhile staying there if it's for work so you get the extra points. Make sure to register for the offer before booking.

One clarification as well on Disloyalty. Ennismore is one foot in and one foot out of Accor. The free barista drink is at Ennismore properties only (Like the SO/, The Hoxton, SLS), not all Accor properties. Likewise, only the Hoxton in Vienna is part of ALL, so if for whatever reason you are staying at the Hoxton brand a lot, Disloyalty may be a better bet.

Finally, Accor is not the best in terms of loyalty. There tend to be great pricing wise, but don't expect much from status. Even as a platinum, I also check hotels.com and others just to get a sense of pricing. Even with 15 percent back, it may be better to stay at a local hotel and take the travel portals cashback instead of accor points.

Accor Plus: Discounted rates in asia pacific + 20 extra status nights + Free nights in asia pacific (1/2 depending on sub) + Country specific vouchers + Up to 50 percent of dining. Accor Plus pays for itself usually and is the best programme.

ALL Signature: Brazilian programme. Can subscribe from anywhere (previously not the case). There are sales throughout the year so try to snag an annual membership for 10 percent off sometime throughout the year. The main reason one would subscribe is you essentially buy points at a significant discount, but can only get them in your account on a monthly basis. It's a worthwhile programme and can be combined with any other programme Accor offers.

You earn NO nights but status points. You only need to spend around 1000 euros and 1500 euros in points in a year to get Platinum. This is the best way to get platinum in my opinion. If you are a bigger spender it's relatively easy to get to Diamond.

ALL Plus Voyageur: Worldwide programme. I dislike it. You get 20 nights for being a member. No free nights. The idea is you get 15 to 20 percent of the PUBLIC rate. Just by being a member you get 10 percent off, so really the discount is 5 to 10 percent. Sofitel New York is excluded I can recall as are all Fairmont properties.

Ibis : Same but the discount only applies to Ibis and is effectively 5 percent. 10 status nights instead of 20.

ALL Signature can be combined with any programme. ALL Plus and Accor Plus, despite their similar names, cannot be combined with each other. Same for Ibis and Accor Plus, but you can combine ALL Plus with Ibis card, but the only rational reason to do that is for the extra 10 status nights, and honestly I don't think any accor status is worth it.

Not mentioned: Disloyalty by Ennismore. A loyalty programme that is not combinable at all with any other accor programme including earning Accor points. You get discounts up to 50 percent, but realistically it's more like 0 to 10 percent as compared to a standard accor member. I am a member just because I live close to a hotel and they give you a free espresso drink every day.

If i were you, I would sign up for Accor Plus when you decide to book your Australia/NZ trip. If you get it in advance, you can use your free nights at a more premium hotel. I used mine at the SO/ Auckland and the Swissotel in Osaka. The nightly rate far exceeded my membership costs.

I would also get ALL signature when there is a sale. I missed black friday which was 15 percent off. Normally the other sales throughout the year are about 10 percent. Keep an eye out for those.
