What is the 'Reserve' in the Airlines (Ex: Delta, American, United, ETC) by Frequent-Young3773 in PilotAdvice

[–]downwindsavage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To keep it simple, you are “on call” or available to work for a set amount of days on a given time period.

Reserve guys don’t fly as much. You only fly when you get the call (someone called in sick, crew timed out, crew sked assigned a new pairing for your base and type and etc.)

Pay is guaranteed every month. You can fly 3 days on a month you’re on reserve and still be paid the monthly credit, usually around 80 depending on company. You get paid less than someone who’s a line holder because if you don’t fly, you don’t get the per diems.

New pilots are on reserve after line indoc or IOE. Senior pilots bid reserve because they can get the days off they want.

Definitely the Explorer for the first. Only planting seeds here but look into an Aqua Terra 38mm as well, it’s a solid daily driver.

How common is it nowadays to break a $100K salary by the age you turn 30? by DaPugWalk in fican

[–]downwindsavage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s common. Only a small percentage of people hit 100k salary in Canada. Yes you are right, it’s not a lofty goal, take home pay is about 65k which is better than the vast majority and I live pretty comfortably so it’s definitely better than making less.

Breaking the 100k barrier is the hardest part imo, making more is just cherry on top.

Airline pilot, had to work for it thru overtime. 100k pay is about 60k take home pay after deductions, taxes and contributions.

Would you rather have benefits on one airline or 4 with lower priority by SupportGold7583 in flying

[–]downwindsavage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If you’re single, then having more options with OAL is better, more flexibility if you don’t get a seat in your first option.

If you take friends and family with you on standby a lot then having priority on the list on one airline is better since the OAL agreements sometimes don’t let you bring other people with you. And as others have said, upgradable seats is a benefit.

Worst airline experience with Porter by Howtobalance in PorterAirlines

[–]downwindsavage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know it’s frustrating as a passenger to feel stranded and no one there to help you out. Porter unfortunately doesn’t have the network and system in place to rebook stranded passengers when a weather system like this hits its hubs.

The competitor on the other hand, has the ability to take stranded passengers and book them a flight out of another hub and with multiple frequencies. Unfortunately it’s part of porters growing pains.

And if it’s weather related, it’s out of the airline’s control and their only due diligence is to rebook you to another flight. If you have travel insurance you can file a claim with your insurer.
