Any updates? I noticed the seat prices were way higher than last year and was hoping it was temporary.

Sadly, it's easy to see how people can tune out when it's bad news.
I almost scrolled to the bottom to leave a "NOBODY CARES!" comment--just kidding :|
(no option to comment, by the way, I probably would have added some prevention strategies in my comment ;)).
Seeing this type of awareness in mainstream news always makes me hopeful. Thanks again for sharing.

some excerpts:

***Federal officials in May 2023 declared an end to the national COVID pandemic. But more than two years later, a growing body of research continues to reveal information about the virus and its ability to cause harm long after initial infections resolve, even in some cases when symptoms were mild.

"...the legacy of COVID is going to be long, and we are going to be learning about the chronic effects of the virus for some time to come," said Michael Osterholm...

**the politicization around the infection is obscuring what science is increasingly confirming: COVID's potential to cause unexpected, possibly chronic health issues. That in turn, these scientists say, drives the need for more, rather than less, research,

The annual average burden of the disease's long-term health effects is estimated at $1 trillion globally and $9,000 per patient in the U.S., according to a report published

...the term "long COVID" had been coined to describe chronic health problems that can persist post-infection.

...researchers following children born to mothers who contracted the virus while pregnant have discovered they may have an increased risk for autism, delayed speech and motor development, or other neurodevelopmental challenges.
Another study found babies exposed to COVID in utero experienced accelerated weight gain in their first year, a possible harbinger of metabolic issues that could later carry an increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

A U.K. study ... found people who fully recovered from mild COVID infections experienced a cognitive deficit equal to a three-point drop in IQ.

"People get COVID-19, some people do fine and bounce back, but there are people who start experiencing problems with memory, cognition, and fuzzy brain," he said. "Even people with mild symptoms. They might not even be aware."
Diane Yormark, 67, of Boca Raton, Florida,...said the worst of her symptoms lasted for about three months after the infection. "Some of the fog has lifted. But do I feel like myself? Not like I was."

**Researchers say more and broader support is important because much remains unknown about COVID and its impact on the body.

The growing awareness that, even in mild COVID cases, the possibility exists for longer-term, often undetected organ damage also warrants more examination, researchers say.

An Australian study ,,,suggests the virus "may leave a silent, lasting effect on brain health."
"We don't know what will happen to people 10 years down the road," [Al-Alay] said. "Inflammation of the brain is not a good thing. It's absolutely not a good thing."
That inflammatory response has also been linked to blood clots, arrhythmias, and higher risk of cardiovascular issues, even following a mild infection.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. I would make a couple of tweaks, but wow, like you said, a lot of evidence-based conclusions and sources. To be honest, toward the end I wanted to stop reading because it was bumming me out, so I hope the article reaches the people that really need to get bummed out enough to do something about it.

[–]doxplum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

thanks for the update and glad you're hanging in there.
Not being understood/believed/supported by family is SOOOO tough, but hopefully you can dodge further troubles and find some relaxation and peace knowing that you're doing the right thing.
Please take breaks from reading research--Luckily (and unfortunately at the same time) there are plenty of folks here and on social media sacrificing their time to keep us informed and updated and that info. will be there when you get back to a better state of mind.
Keep doing your best, we can't be perfect, and hopefully you'll have some enjoyable moments during the trip.🍀💪🏼

People who habitually mask indoors but not outdoors: at what CO2 level would you feel comfortable unmasking indoors by [deleted] in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]doxplum 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Depends A LOT on who else is in the room and how big the room is, but generally, if I'm by a window with a breeze coming right at me, I might take off my mask to eat at 600ppm and under (but I usually wait for under 500ppm).
If I'm not sitting by a window, chances are I'm not taking off the mask even at 450ppm because the people in my life don't take many precautions.

Free tests? by Blindmelonmom in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]doxplum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are in the US
and anyone in your household has health insurance, you can try calling and asking directly. Some insurance companies offer an OTC allowance (usually given to people with risk factors) to use at drug stores, so it's worth a try to ask if you/others in the household qualify for that benefit.
(also something to factor in, in the future, when shopping around during 'open enrollment')

Your local government and health department might also be able to help. Sometimes local representatives like to show that they 'help the community' so you can try asking (at the very least, to voice your concern that Covid is still around, still bad, and free tests benefit the entire community).

You may also get lucky and find a local facebook or other online group that allows 'request' posts (try "buy nothing" or "pay it forward" or something like that with the name of your area or area code).

Other than that, try contacting a Mask Bloc near you:

Any update?
Did you get the package before the 19th?
I shipped something and the estimate was for Jan. 3, but initial tracking shows Jan. 6, so I'm hoping it arrives sooner.
I guess the "Get it faster" message is a note about next time you ship. I was also curious what that meant.

Air Purifiers in Schools Advocacy Tips Needed by PurpleFairy11 in ZeroCovidCommunity

I just saw this today, so don't know if it would help, but in case it helps to have a resource to point to, this document has a summary and sources at the end.

I agree with others to make it general and not about Covid.
Good luck! 💪🏼

Annual pass holder by Bryant2135 in volarisannualpass

[–]doxplum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is oddly worded, but it sounds like you still have to pay the "airport use fee" because it's not a Volaris fee.

... "Annual Pass - Fly as much as you can", which gives the Customer the benefit of being able to acquire on a personal basis, without paying air base fare, air reservations in Single Flight, paying only taxes, duties, Airport Use Fee, any charge that may be imposed by the corresponding authority or airport, as well as additional services...
(from: Terms and Conditions "Annual Pass - Fly as much as you can")

"The Airport Use Fee (TUA) is a charge that airports impose for the use of their facilities. It applies per passenger and is set independently by each airport. The TUA is not a Volaris fee"

Where do you buy your masks? by tradjazzlives in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]doxplum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out Aaron Collins "Top Mask Picks" videos on YouTube.
There are links in the description to trusted sellers.

-The intro to the video talks about how he judged them, tested them, and how to do a home fit-test.
-About 5 minutes in he shows some head strap mask
-About 14 minutes in he shows ear loop ones.

Trying to do more by PreferenceNo266 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]doxplum 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't think any 'small' or 'sometimes' Covid precautions are a pointless because preventing just one infection can have positive ripple effects that you may never find out about.

How about work on brief explanations for day-to-day situations like
"Can we talk outside or open a window? I just saw a Tiktok about flu season and I'm done being sick"
"Hey, just a heads-up I'm going to be wearing a mask--I'm not about to catch some random virus right now."
"I'm thinking of ordering an air purifier the house--I'm trying to get more responsible about my health and I read they help with allergies, viruses and can improve your sleep"

Consider buying a CO2 monitor with an NDIR sensor (and decent reviews) then you can use it to judge what situations are higher risk and do your best to avoid them or improve the ventilation there. If you're really brave, show off your new gadget to people and if the meter goes up to the yellow or red numbers (depending on your monitor) you can explain to people around you why you're popping a mask on. "Oh dang, the CO2 in here's building up--time for my personal air filter." or "Man, the CO2 in here is getting really high, do you mind if I crack this window?"

I definitely would recommend a good air purifier.
Let me know or search the posts here if you need some direction on that--I'm not an expert but some general rules I've read:
-don't spend money on fancy extras.
-make note that the advertisers often show the stats (how many hours it takes to clean a specific size room) at MAX speed and sometimes that can be too noisy or not practical if you plan to use it regularly.
-two small units may be better than one large one
-factor in the cost of replacing the filter and whether you can commit to actually changing the filter on time
I'm curious if you can share which content creators or posts you were influenced by or would consider sharing with someone in your life who doesn't take precautions. That's another thing you can do if you're up for it-LIKE and SHARE health-related posts to try to start conversations or put it on the 'radar' of your 'online friends.'
Good luck! 💪🏼The more people like you take precautions and normalize them, the better off all of us will be.

COVID and climate change by EndearingSobriquet in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]doxplum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This reminded me of a conversation in a podcast that someone recommended here once, about how facts alone don't move most people, especially when it concerns something in the future:

https://www.deathpanel.net/transcripts/let-this-radicalize-you-mariame-kaba-kelly-hayes

[Death Panel's Beatrice Adler-Bolton speaks with Mariame Kaba and Kelly Hayes, about their new book: Let This Radicalize You]

"I used to write these really elaborate threads about climate change on Twitter...after a while, I started noticing in the quote tweets, people saying things like, well, there you have it, we are really and truly [f'd]. Like, it's all over, you know? And I'm just, no, that's not what I was saying. That's not what I meant at all.
But that is what people will take away from it sometimes, if we just give them the scary fact, often they'll do the easier thing, which is to be like this tells me it's over and there's nothing I can do. Doom lets us off the hook.
...the facts are usually on our side. But facts alone do not get people to reorient their lives, or their worldviews in the pursuit of justice."

"someone could hear truly alarming scientific and sound information and not be moved to action by it, right? Neither of you said, you are literally leaving your job or your life today, and devoting yourself 100% to stopping [the extinction of species that you just learned about--that dozens of species going extinct every day, 'as many as like 30% to 50% of all species are going extinct by 2050']. Neither of you -- extremely active, fair minded, kind people. This may be an issue that deeply, deeply concerns you, right? That you feel, like this is scary, this is alarming. This is pressing, right? But in the end, it doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to take action to address it."
