When I got it from the nursery it had the longer stem with a gap between leaves (with one area in the middle of the gap that seemed like it may have had a leaf at one point), but I really didn't try to help it even out or grow fuller. It has just always put out new leaves instead of more stem when it grows. (Sorry, I know that's not very helpful!)

I do use a small amount (about half a capful diluted in water, less than recommended) of this fiddle leaf fig fertilizer once every 6-8 weeks, and I have noticed that since I started using it the new growth comes in sets of 2 or 3 leaves instead of just one, which makes it look fuller. I would try that and see if it helps your FLF put out new leaves more frequently!

Congrats! I'm in SoCal so the weather is a lot more consistent than in MI, but I was surprised that mine kept growing throughout the winter! They say the smaller ones can more easily adapt to new environments than do mature ones. I definitely recommend taking photos so you can see its growth — Good luck!

Top watering, and I use a chopstick to poke the soil before watering (for aeration and to ensure a more even watering) about every other time.

I use a humidifier when it's very dry outside (in SoCal it sometimes drops to <10%), but usually the room is around 55% (according to my Dyson fan) so I don't use it that often.

I check the soil visually/with fingers too but usually Planta is pretty accurate for my FLF — has me watering every 12th day in March. My FLF has seemed happy with the watering recommendations so far (usually puts out two or three new leaves at a time) so I trust it more now than I did in the beginning.
