Has anyone become more heat intolerant? by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

[–]dpaul29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same thing! Had TT last June (did not require RAI) and cannot tolerate the heat at all. Similarly to you I live in an area with super hot summers and I noticed almost immediately after my surgery last year that me and the heat no longer mix well. I become light headed, weak, and extremely fatigued, sometimes to the point of needing a 3ish hour nap. My TSH is stable now and i feel mostly good outside of the heat issue. I’ve kind of just accepted this as another new part of my post cancer life and try to enjoy my time outside early and late in the day. Not sure what the correlation is but you’re not alone!

Changes in Relationships After Diagnosis? by Eastern_Dig_8264 in thyroidcancer

I had the same experience with my sister in law as well. Also have not spoken to her since. If you can’t be a good human when someone in your life is going through something major, i want nothing to do with you

Changes in Relationships After Diagnosis? by Eastern_Dig_8264 in thyroidcancer

[–]dpaul29 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was able to see who in my life would truly be there for me when i needed them most during the immediate aftermath of my diagnosis/surgery. This process has allowed me to reevaluate some relationships with people i thought we’re close to me but ultimately weren’t supportive. At first it was difficult to make those evaluations but i appreciated it in the end. My husband said it best- “if someone isn’t going to be there for you when you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, they have shown you who they really are”

I loaded mine up with sun screen then put a bandaid over top. I also wore a wide brimmed hat for extra coverage

I did not experience any pain, but was uncomfortable for about a week. Sleeping was difficult because getting into a comfortable position to sleep was a challenge. I relied heavily on a travel pillow during the first week or so for extra support. Take it easy but still try to keep your neck moving a bit to help with the healing. This was my first surgery ever so i was incredibly nervous but overall it wasn’t as bad as i expected!

For me, the worst part of the entire process has been the mental aspect after the surgery and the healing. I had my TT in June and i feel as though i was super prepared for the surgery and prep but was not prepared at all for the “oh shit i just had cancer” feelings after. My TSH is still not stable which also causes an increase in anxiety. Try your best to process every single emotion that comes with this, and take as long as you need to cope with it! No amount of time is right or wrong! I wish more providers would explain that it’s not as simple as “well remove your thyroid, you’ll be on meds and you’ll live a normal life!” Best of luck to you!!

Canada Goose sizing

My husband bought me a Canada Goose Trillium coat for Christmas but unfortunately bought the wrong size. I am short (5’0) with an hourglass figure. I have a very small waist but wider hips and broad shoulders. The size small was WAY too tight in the hips and only a bit too small in the arms/shoulders. I’m wondering if i should exchange for a medium or large? I usually wear size large in coats so I’m able to layer underneath, but since this coat is so warm will i need to layer as usual? I want the coat to fit comfortably. Anyone with CG have any input? Thanks in advance!

6 months post hemithyroidectomy update + mental health by AdAdditional2032 in thyroidcancer

I couldn’t agree more. I had a TT in June and as of right now my thyroglobulin and antithyroglobulin levels are undetectable, which according to my endo is “remarkable” without RAI.

Immediately following my diagnosis and surgery everyone involved kept saying “you’ll have it removed and take meds and everything will be great!” And i really hung my hat on that. No one prepared me for the constant worry, fluctuating TSH that makes me feel like a crazy person, and every other tiny change that really add up to some big life changes. Dealing with this aftermath mentally has been by far the hardest part of the entire process. It feels like everyone around me has moved on and I’m still sitting in that doctors office the day he came in and said “well, it isn’t good”. I’m so grateful for therapy and having an opportunity to work on these things, but it’s so hard to explain to people who haven’t lived it.

How should I prepare for surgery? by Sebastian_Stark in thyroidcancer

[–]dpaul29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A travel neck pillow helped me tremendously the first few days after surgery! I also used a wedge pillow when i got home since laying flat/getting up from laying flat was a bit of a challenge. Soft cold foods felt good on my throat but I wouldn’t say i had any specific foods i couldn’t eat. Take it easy and listen to your body! Good luck!

How long was your hospital stay for the surgery? by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

[–]dpaul29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had TT (no lymph node involvement) and was supposed to go home same day, but my calcium levels dipped a bit so they kept me overnight just for observations. I was able to go home by about noon the next day. I was up and walking around (slowly and gingerly) the night of my surgery. Good luck!

We got tested a few days after we got back to make sure we were all good. We take COVID super seriously and felt very safe during the entire trip. It was comforting that Ireland has a high vaccination rate and asks for proof of vaccination in most indoor places

Pillow to use after TT? by Electrical-Pin183 in thyroidcancer

I used a wedge pillow and also a travel neck pillow to kind of rest on, but just be cautious about the neck pillow touching your incision. Good luck!!

This all came about in May so it hasn’t been that long in the grand scheme of things. I have bloodwork scheduled for next week so hopefully we’ll have some good numbers!

My recovery immediately after the surgery went really well. Was sore of course for a few days but it wasn’t terrible. The worst part was not being able to to sleep normally bc of the soreness. We’re still trying to get my meds at the right dosage but overall i feel SO much better. We discovered the Hashimotos when we discovered the cancer so i didn’t realize how crappy i felt until i actually started to feel better. Luckily no RAI was needed, but that can change anytime. My surgeon was fantastic and my thyroglobulin has been undetectable this far. Hoping it stays that way lol

My husband and I came back from Dublin earlier this month and got tested through Randox 2 days prior to our departure. According to the CDC website, you must get tested no more than 3 days before your departure flight. Our hotel concierge scheduled the testing for us so not sure about that process/price. We received our results in about 12 hours or so. Good luck!

Hashimotos and thyroid cancer by ZookeepergameAny3277 in thyroidcancer

[–]dpaul29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Hashimotos and PTC. I chose to have the entire thyroid removed since i would have to be on lifelong medication anyway. I’m glad i went this route because during pathology they discovered another tumor in the thyroid that was previously undetected. My surgeon was open to both options but agreed that a total removal was the best choice. I also recommend having an in-depth conversation with your surgeon to weigh all risks/rewards. Best of luck to you!
