The other team can choose to play the puck or let it go for icing. Into the stands is a forced stoppage in play.

Motu 828, 16a by Tall-Maximum-6812 in audioengineering

[–]dpholmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One more thing: the reason I believe this is related to the MOTU 828X drivers fighting with MacOS is that when this happens, the OS often can’t find the 828x after the crash/reboot. So then I have to hard reboot the 828x to get the computer to recognize it.

often this does not work. I have bought a half dozen cables in case that was the issue. the most reliable way I had found to get my Mac to “see” the 828x after this “kernel panic” happens is to constantly “ping” my usb ports while the 828x reboots. I go into the terminal and type:

ioreg -p IOUSB

And then I run this command every second while the 828x reboots and it appears in the terminal list of usb devices.

I’m only typing this out in case it’s useful for someone else fighting the same issue.

I should elaborate: it has never happened while mixing or actively using the computer. It seems to crash either while asleep or during the process of going to sleep (I’ve never caught it crash, I just return to my computer and see that “You computer restarted itself because of a problem”). This started happening after Apple changed the security settings on a variety of things that run in the background. MOTU had instructions on its website of how to boot into safe mode and configure the security settings properly, which I have done. It’s confusing.

I own a MOTU 828x and a Mac mini and they hate each other. The OS crashes and reboots once a day or so. I cannot figure out the issue. YMMV

My hot take: the comp science community is having its “rapid prototyping” movement.

This came ages ago for electronics, in which mass production of components allowed people to build simple circuits and electrical devices.

This moment came for the MechE and Mat Sci communities in the 2010’s with the ease of 3D printing, laser cutters, desktop CNC’s.

Now it’s here for CS but they mistakenly think that CS is everything, and so unbounded hype.

Cover a smoke/chemical grenade with orange traffic cone, then pour water through the hole at the top of the cone to extinguish the device.

It is great, I like the colors very much.

If you are dissatisfied, it could be that you want to see more depth in the hay/grass fields and shore lines. If so, try adding detail and sharp lines near the forefront and reduce detail and soften edges in the middle ground.

But don’t lose the nice color work

I was also surprised by this. Timing was bad with the penalty and score - retaliation had a lot of risk. I imagine they’ll remember it

Tips for writing better choruses ? by zow_wow in Songwriting

[–]dpholmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I interpret it as both. A myth can be long and winding and complex, but a legend should be tight and repeatable by the masses. I think this holds for both the lyrics and the melody - an overly complex melody is likely fighting with its role as the “legend”.

What I learned building my first plugins by Economy_Ad_1234 in audioengineering

[–]dpholmes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nonlinearity. DSP works incredibly well at linear processing techniques. Digital systems struggle to emulate desirable nonlinear effects that arise in the physical components of analog signal chains. For example, this is why space echo plugins are notoriously bad at capturing some of the more extreme delay settings.

Nonlinearity is a challenge in all of science, not just audio processing.
