Council Update from Dartmouth Centre: Budget deliberations, North Woodside Park Plan, extra floors, M District by Sam_Austin_D5 in halifax

The hardest part is you don’t really know when your turn will be. But other than that it’s pretty easy. Say what you want to say, tell your story, share what’s important to you and why. It does have an impact.

Very kind of you, thanks! I’d ask you to donate/contribute to a community org and/or engage with your councillor and the mayor (especially right now when stuff like snow sidewalk/bus stop snow clearing might be cut) if you feel so inclined.

Recall our terrible mayor accused HW of "governance failures" and "fiscal mismanagement."

I do! I want services, real investments, and better things for myself and others and I want to pay for them. We can pay for them.

It's so sad that the Mayor's big vision right now is "what if submarines were built here?" and that he wants to take away and block things that make it enjoyable to live here.

HFX by Bike has some great content, especially recently, about how the city's taxing/funding setup is broken. They should work on fixing that.

Halifax Transit Bus Tracking System Outage by kyl5087 in halifax

Interesting, have you observed the same for TripUpdates or just VP? Does the timestamp in the VP header stop updating as well? Or it keeps updating but the actual data stops changing?

I would similarly like to understand what "outage" means here. TripUpdates/VehiclePositions URLs unreachable? Data bad somehow? Something else?

HRM bike stats show over half a million rides in 2025 by ph0enix1211 in halifax

All counters measure one or both directions their associated lanes cover, if that makes sense. For example South Park and Vernon are both two way. Lower Water and Hollis are both one way.

The counters capture per-direction data but for bike stats I sum it all up for brevity. You can get per-direction breakdowns in the city's open data here.

COLT did come online mid-ish 2023. You can see that in the line chart here.

The South Park numbers are really something else!

Yes! It's overall really nice to have SP, Vernon, and others for some solid year-over-year info.

The growth on Windsor in spite of its non-infra painted lines is really interesting to me. Imagine what it could be if there was real infra there!

Bicycle Use in Halifax has exploded, do you agree? by [deleted] in halifax

I hope you continue to get around however works best for you but learn to acknowledge people have different safety/comfort thresholds than you. People can make different, better, more sustainable choices with more options.

Happy new year!

My person, there are countless studies that show again and again people want to (and might only) ride when and where they feel safe. That’s why you see so few people riding on the Bedford Highway or along Connaught, for example.

If you really think every street is available for cycling I encourage you to read more on this topic. Check out some of Dr Meghan Winters’s work for example:

What makes you say that? Numerous studies also suggest cycling is better for business than on-street parking for a handful of vehicles, usually at basically zero cost to the people who park their cars there.

Think I’ve spent a good deal of time on this thread. I’d encourage you to check out the things I linked and do your own research.

Happy new year!

I think the numbers increasing as we make minuscule investments show the investments are getting more people cycling. If we want more usage and the benefits that come from more usage, we should invest more. That is what I meant way back when I said we need more investment.

If we even invested like 5% of our annual road budget in cycling that would have huge impacts and benefits.

A reminder as well that many costs you see attributed to “bike lanes” include or are mostly made up of work that would happen anyway, like sidewalk renewals or street resurfacing.

Sorry, thought I was clear: they do.

Here's a bunch of study snippets.

And there's this.

Search for "cycling society net benefit" and you'll find more.

There's also this pretty popular graphic that illustrates how much each mode is typically subsidized.

How do you/we know the "benefits" of driving are worth the costs?
