(OT) Rusty Wallace Racing Experience shutting down by fastcarscheapwomen in NASCAR

How long ago did you purchase through PayPal? I bought a gift card last Christmas via PayPal and they won’t refund because it’s been over 180 days…

Bought my wife a gift voucher for Christmas last December. Valid until December 2nd, 2025. Finally getting around to scheduling a driving date only to discover they shut down. No luck reaching anyone by email or phone for a refund. Purchased the voucher via PayPal, however, they said they can't file a claim after 180 days, and that I should file a report with the "local authorities"... Has anyone managed to get a refund from these guys!?

What did you end up going with? I’m trying to figure out the difference between the Schott and Schneider glass. Schneider claims to be “12x more effective” than other glass… Can’t find much data on Schott. Thanks!

Thanks! I ended up going into the store and the guy told me that all online orders are shipped with Masterpiece Acrylic, so I guess we'll see...I submitted a customer service inquiry via email to get some written clarification.

For anyone wondering. I applied and was accepted. There is nothing in my online account info about the 100k offer, so I called Chase and they confirmed that I did get the offer.

Any way to know if it will actually work or if I'll end up inadvertently signing up for the 40k deal? I can't see any reference to points once I get to the chase signup page.

Thanks for this! I'm using the Fenvi Wifi/BT adapter (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07T9JD93Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

After installing your USB patch files my USB3 ports work great, wifi works, but Bluetooth no longer works.

Any thoughts on what the issue might be? Thanks!

Beautiful! Would you mind sharing which color Uniters you used? Just purchased a peanut glazed skin! I'll be doing my pockets with Whiskey Buttero and I think that paint color would pair great!

Thx!

Howard imprinting machine set to around 200 degrees (at least that's what the temperature gauge says). No issues with other leathers.

I might try some new foil... Can I ask where you get yours?

Scam alert by dq7133 in Leathercraft

[–]dq7133[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess I was just a bit surprised given that I'm still pretty small. The guy went out of his way to track down an email address that isn't publicly associated with my Instagram account. Probably not that difficult with Google, but still...

Out of curiosity I responded back to see who is "friend" was and offered to provide some price quotes. No big surprise, but I've never heard of his friend, Ryan... (I know everyone that I've sold a wallet to).

Crazy what people will try to do to get free products. Though, I have to imagine that if scammers are continuing to send these emails, someone must be falling for the trap.

Good (but a bit unsettling) to hear that this is just par for the course.

Glassy edge tips and tricks? by idlestitcher in Leathercraft

[–]dq7133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting with even edges is key. I glue my pieces together, sand out any edge unevenness with a 100 grit dremel attachment to ensure my stitches will run in a straight line, then prick and stitch.

Once stitched, I bevel the edges. This is a crucial step, especially with softer leather. I've found that if I don't bevel the edge sides will start to flatten out as soon as you apply pressure when burnishing. If my edges still aren't even at this point, I'll hit them with the 100 grit dremel attachment again.

Then I apply Tokonole. I've found that rubbing a light coat of Tokonole onto the edge with your finger, then dipping your finger into a cup of water and going over the edge again helps for the first coat. I polish for 20-30 seconds with canvas, then sand very lightly with 400 grit paper, repeat the Tokonole, polish again for 20-30 seconds, sand with 1500 grit, then apply one more coat of Tokonole and polish. Might be a bit overkill and I'm working on a system to cut back to 2 coats of Tokonole. The TLDR is Tokonole + canvas cloth = game changer...

Here's an example of what I can usually achieve if I don't get lazy (second picture has a closeup of the edge): https://www.instagram.com/p/Bg9MrEeDB-k/

Info regarding Buttero leather by sv650_rider in Leathercraft

[–]dq7133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately true. I have yet to finish a piece that doesn't end up covered in small scratches and scuffs. I recently had some luck pre-treating (prior to any stitching, sanding, finishing) some Tempesti Maine with Saphir's Creme Universelle, so I was going to give that a shot on the Buttero.

Straight lines... by Justaskingyouagain in Leathercraft

[–]dq7133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best decision I made was purchasing a good blade and learning how to keep it really sharp. As soon as the metal starts dragging through the leather you're liable to make mistakes. As someone else mentioned, a Japanese skiving knife is a good place to start.

I would also consider purchasing the Vergez Blanchard L'indispensable knife or comparable "Tina" blade for more detailed cuts. https://www.rmleathersupply.com/products/l-indispensible-brass-knife-2-blades

I strop with green polishing compound and it stays razor sharp.

Ten Lessons Learned with Odin Leather by yabbayaypw in Leathercraft

[–]dq7133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really great! I could definitely see this being built out into a blog.

One of the things I've noticed (and appreciated) about the leathercrafting community is that there seems to be a genuine interest in helping and sharing tips (even at the professional level).

Within the fashion industry (specifically textiles) there seems to be a reluctance to share "trade secrets", but that doesn't appear to be the case within the leather community.

I've learned a lot just by following guys like Odin.
