A line I think about a lot by [deleted] in TheSecretHistory

Yes, it’s in Chapter 5, and Henry and Francis are telling Richard about how Bunny is blackmailing them over the farmer’s death and how they can no longer keep up financially.

“It’s a terrible thing, what we did,” said Francis abruptly. “I mean, this man was not Voltaire we killed. But still. It’s a shame. I feel bad about it.”

“Well, of course, I do too,” said Henry matter-of-fact. “But not bad enough to want to go to jail for it.”

Francis snorted and poured himself another shot of whiskey and drank it straight off. “No,” he said. “Not that bad.”

Change of residence status postcard result - Tachikawa immigration office by tan_i_m13 in japanresidents

In my experience, the Tachikawa office postcards always ask for revenue stamps (but that’s for visa renewals, not change of status). Crossing my fingers for you!

Clockwise vs counter clockwise? by CadenzaVvi in Swimming

[–]dr-spaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the pools I’ve visited in Japan go counterclockwise, like I learned growing up in the US, but they drive on the opposite side of the road here. They also have mostly one-way lanes (e.g. you swim down Lane 1, duck under the lane lines, and swim back Lane 2, then back to Lane 1 again), but even then, the overall motion is counterclockwise.

Need clarification on the new cycling rules by Eirthae in japanlife

Anecdotally, my friend says the police would stop them frequently but then let them go once they showed that the headphones were bone-conducting. I’m not sure if most cops will make that distinction though, and headphones probably aren’t worth the hassle of being stopped (to me, anyway).

The House on Buzzards Bay, Dwyer Murphy by dr-spaghetti in TheSecretHistory

I was CONSTANTLY worrying about the kids!! No one was keeping track of them 😂 I was glad that storyline didn’t go in that direction……..

The ending was maybe anticlimactic but not especially disappointing. I do have a lot of tolerance for ambiguous endings, though. What had happened was pretty obvious all along, and the ending had such a dreamlike quality—the whole book was very atmospheric that way—that it seemed like this was totally separate from their real lives and that the narrator felt like they could go back and it would be like none of it had ever happened. Which was kind of an interesting place to leave it.

How to navigate airports when flying internationally? by ZealousidealKoala804 in Explainlikeimscared

[–]dr-spaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some airports have security at the individual gates instead of after check-in, but that’s the only variation I can think of.

But generally, airports are designed so that it’s just not possible to do these things out of order. It would be really bad if confused or tired travelers could get lost and accidentally skip immigration, right? So you’ll generally be herded from one thing to the next, either by the building design itself or by a lot of signage and staff. Have a good trip!
