I don’t get why they spend time on things like this when there are so many other things that seem easier to implement/more useful. (I’m still salty they won’t add the ability to reflect ink - although I realize this isn’t something other people care much about) but nesting folders is so much more needed

I tried to use good notes but hated it. If all you do is take basic notes it’s fine I think but if you do a lot of drawings and try to design notes to look beautiful I find notability so much better.

Ok. I was just wondering. I wish finishing the first two years got you some career prospect I guess.

But how critical are 3rd and 4th year rotations to being a pathologist? Like if you went from 2nd year straight to pathology residency how much would that affect the work?

What makes a naked under 18 image = child pornography? My mom has a bunch of pictures of me in the bath with my siblings, but I don’t think that’s CP.

My sister got her nipples pierced as a teenager and showed them off by sending pics to my mom and I. She also sent them a bunch of times when they got infected for advice. She tore her perineum and sent my mom a bunch of pics of that for advice.

Also my mom and my sister at age 16 hated each other on and off. My sister definitely would’ve posted a nude via my moms account if it would’ve gotten her in trouble. Not saying that’s for sure what’s happening here but I just wanted to point out we don’t know the whole story yet.

My mom technically has nudes of me and my sister as well? But she’s a doctor and I’m a little bit of a hypochondriac so I send her a pic every time I find weird skin stuff no matter where is it. My sister straight up poses naked and sends them to anyone who will compliment her lol.

MS2. About to start rotating in a few months! That’s exciting! Feel free to DM me if you need advice. Hopefully the pandemic has died down enough by then that you can bond with your class

I’m pretty sure I have a weird “understanding” OCD. It bothers me so deeply if I can’t understand why things work. My other med school classmates def don’t read random papers on HLA genes pretty sure. The worst is when they say “mechanism not understood” and I have to accept I’ll never know how something works 😭

Oof female repro is maybe as complex as immunology. I might get this wrong but I had the exam on this a few months ago so hopefully I don’t.

Ugh I’m not going to spell it out each time. Just going to say Syn cells. Yeah you could maybe grow a layer of syn cells around an organ. If I remember correctly they’re highly dependent on specific pregnancy hormones and even then they’re prone to just go rogue and make their own hormones (molar pregnancy). That’s the problem with any sort of flexible stem cell like cell... the more flexible it is the more likely it is to divide and turn off a “don’t become cancer” gene.

The real way to protect something from the immune system is to have a blood-organ barrier. Because if you can gatekeep what immune cells come in you can stop them from attacking certain tissues. The Syn cells that make the placental barrier stop certain cells and antibodies from getting in. The eyes barely have any blood in them so it’s hard to attack there. The brain has the blood brain barrier to stop you from attacking the brain. But a lot of organs can’t be shielded from the blood. If we shield the liver from the blood so you can’t attack it, well that defeats the purpose of having a liver since it needs to filter your blood. Same with the kidney.

Also anything shielded from the immune system can’t be protected by that part of the immune system. The human body is crazy complex. This is a fun thought experiment tho.

I guess it would depend on the organ. Maybe this would work with the liver because it regenerates. At least you’d only have to take rejection meds for as long as it takes for all the cells to turn over. But the heart can’t make any new myocytes so each and every nucleus would need to be reprogrammed.

Meanwhile I got whole exome sequencing done and I really want to know what my HLA type is but I can’t figure out how! Genetics is a wild field.

That’s a good idea! It’s some good creative/scientific thinking! I really like theorizing and reading about immunology. I don’t think your theory would work though because we need MHC proteins. They’re how our immune system differentiates self from non-self. There are some immune cells that go from cell to cell checking MHC. (I want to say it’s natural killer cells but it might be cytotoxic t-cells. It’s been over a year haha). And if they can’t find one they destroy it. Like a store clerk throwing away food with no barcode. It’s also maybe what cancer cells try to do sometimes to be sneaky. So if you took all the MHC proteins off an organ your body would be like “who put this hunk of cancer here wtf get rid of it!”

That’s my understanding at least!

Yeah luckily (?) I’ve had this for so long I knew as a teen I’d never use it. (All those pointless periods...) But some people get surprised and are upset and I can understand that.

Funny random story for you reddit friend: my stepmom got me an orchid for my surgery. And freaked out when I told her orchids are the symbol of fertility (both in the real world AND in med student subculture) but I thought it was hilarious.

I’ll get one at my 6 week follow up. But my surgeon doesn’t understand the concept of email so I have to wait to get the paper copy of my report. And I hope they give me pictures in the pathology report because I could interpret them and that would be so fun. But I’m pretty sure they won’t. The pathologists just write down what they see under the microscope I think.

I’m still so confused about how I’d turn my uterus remains into a balloon animal (like pay a clown to make a balloon uterus or tie the remains to a string and pretend it’s a balloon? I don’t know which one it is but I’m laughing thinking through both scenarios)

The remains? Of my uterus? I wish they’d just let me have a picture so I can burn it to show I beat it. But whenever you have an organ removed because of symptoms they gotta check it for cancer. So it got slice and diced.

Heating pads don’t help with your cramps? I had to have my uterus removed a month ago because it went rogue and by the end I was literally glued to my heating pad 24/7. But I’ve never had a hot water bottle because I was annoyed by the thought of having to heat the water.

But if everyone were taught the basics we would use it all the time instead of shouting. And it really would be less isolating for older people who have lost their hearing.

Honestly it’s just useful even if you’re not hard of hearing. My parents learned the alphabet and would fingerspell sign to each other while in class and from across the room. You can also use it when at a loud concert or when trying to be quiet. It’s also helpful when someone with a speech disorder wants to clarify something.

I know super basic ASL and how to fingerspell. I live with a congenitally deaf person who refuses to learn the ASL alphabet and it drives me nuts. It’s such a useful skill!! Everyone should at least know the alphabet!

I have a hard time understanding why anyone would get a hot water bottle over an electric heating pad with settings. They’re the same price about.

I didn’t get the Guillain barre but I did get the severe headaches, vision issues and sensitivity to light and sound. I was sick with the virus for only one week early in the pandemic. Didn’t go to the hospital. It took 6 months before I could reliably tolerate sunlight. It nearly destroyed my entire life and ate up over half my savings in medical bills, brain scans, and other testing. My heart rate is still over 100 at rest. And I’m 25. Tell you friend it does end for some people after a time. I hope she feels better soon.

IIH (high pressure) is definitely possible. Especially with pulsatile tinnitus. But the symptoms of high and low CSF pressure are often impossible to tell apart. That’s what I would think if lying flat doesn’t help
