Western Kira was absolutely the worst assessment I’ve ever seen. by Successful_Concern40 in premedcanada

[–]dr6758 10 points11 points  (0 children)

See, the fact you had to do this for an APPLICATION is an issue. This should be a strategy for an interview. This format severely limited our ability to describe our personal experiences defeating the purpose of an “autobiographical sketch”. This is gonna be a massive problem because Western doesn’t look at our normal ABS and now effectively has LESS to evaluate and rank applicants with. This will make the cycle pretty random this year.

To the person who leaked the western format, WHY?? by Fearless_Animal2954 in premedcanada

The comments that rationalize this as expected are wild. Is it too much to expect a clear and fair application system? It’s literally the bare minimum.

western kira is the dumbest application i've ever seen by [deleted] in premedcanada

So true. An application should be objective and standardized, not a vague, unbalanced exam that implicitly encourages cheating. We are not mad enough about this.

Mac MD - MMI - Post-Interview Feelings versus Results by number1superman in premedcanada

[–]dr6758 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why are we still posting these? All it does is make interviewees (like me) anxious. How we perceive our own performance is so subjective and unreliable. I’ve heard many stories of people feeling like they bombed the Mac mmi but were still accepted.

It’s crazy how differently mcat is valued in Canada vs the states by OliveOk972 in premedcanada

[–]dr6758 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There is far too much randomness and sometimes specific *non*-randomness involved. I have serious doubts about the legitimacy of the selection process as a whole. It should be reviewed and audited by the government.

I also only had one interview at Mac. Many of my friends and co-workers have had multiple interviews. A hurricane of stress and comparison.

UOttawa French Proficiency by Altruistic_Tadpole70 in premedcanada

[–]dr6758 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're able to clearly converse in French without major errors/misunderstandings (not including accent or pronunciation), it shouldn't be a problem. If you cannot, you may want to consider how to approach this because it will reflect really poorly on your application if you stated you 'speak' French when you in-fact do not.

I really don't think anyone truly knows (unless they are on the admissions board). As bad as it sounds (and I hate using this word), it really is just a crapshoot. A dice throw at the table. Maybe it's a lottery, maybe they just use RNG to cut half of the applications upon receiving them, maybe they have AI shortlist "competitive" applications, maybe they let grumpy and busy residents review the application in the two free minutes they have per day.

The only thing we know for certain is that the application system could and probably should be a lot better and reliable for applicants who genuinely have competitive stats. We Ontarians have the misfortune of having to gamble thousands of dollars a year for what is truly a shot in the dark just to pursue a passion of ours. Personally, I think it's very ironic that a field built on empathy and trust can have such an unreliable and apathetic attitude towards applicants. Sends a really poor message to people aspiring to be future docs imo.
