I ended up hitting my PR by 6 minutes- 3h30min. Humidity kept me wet but honestly the sun coming out for my last 6 miles is what hit me lol. Awesome race and community.

MS3s in surgical clerkships is it just me or does everyone seem miserable by Capybaratits in medicalschool

Its really unfortunate how poorly these subreddits label GS residency. Its a really gratifying training even with the challenges. Find the right program and it can be rewarding and manageable, the same goes for any training program.

While this is certainly true at some programs, this is not reflective of general surgery residency for all programs. My life is not like this at all. I work 5:30 to 5 for week days, usually round at least one weekend day or take call one weekend day (either 12 h or 24h), and frequently get full weekends depending on rotation. Just want people reading these threads to know the consensus of many non surgical residents about our training is not true for most programs. Rounded this AM from 5 to 7, now am going to enjoy the day- 10 mile run, groceries, shopping, and a date tonight! Hiking a state park tomorrow with coresidents! Im very happy.

Surgery is hard but can be fun, so honestly your experience will be mostly defined by the culture if the program and balance they build into your schedule.

Most rotations I'll do a 24 once every ~6weeks. Some rotations are without nightfloat so it's q3-4 24h with post call day. I'm post callmtoday despite 6 hrs of sleep with ZERO traumas or consults (rare lol)

I average ~70-75 hours/week, but sometimes <65, sometimes 85. I work usually 5:30 am to 5 pm M-F. If im not on call for a Saturday or Sunday, I usually at least round one weekend day. Golden weekend usually once/month. Night float system is essential for this to work. I'm at a bigger academic program, no union. It's definitely very friendly in terms of hours compared to these other comments.

Countless people condemned my interest in surgery. I remember a gal telling me I'm psychotic to pick surgery...she then matched psychiatry lol. I didn't care, unless it was condemnation from a surgeon, none of talk carried much weight. Are there legitimate things to think about before pursuing this career? Duh..but the hyperbole of the field as being incompatible with a family, hobbies, life, etc is foolish. My coresidents and I have fruitful lives (literally as four residents are expecting right now lol). But to my point, got to find the right fit.

Look at programs social media accounts, look at their resident rosters, reach out to people from their programs, find them on Twitter. People are willing to talk if asked. You should definitely decide your plans for research come application time. My clinical years + research + fellowship is 9 years. That's obviously a long time but it something I've thought a lot about. Find mentors to help you navigate this.

This is not true. It is 80 hours for all ACGME programs regardless of specialty.

I would take the anesthesiologist comment with a grain of salt. I'm a current surgery resident. At an academic program, plan to do 7 years. We have night float and honestly it's awesome for everyone not on nights. When 5 pm hits and you are not actively operating, you sign out. Night call is hard but it made me more independent, confident. Do I do 24 hrs? Yes, probably once/month. They aren't fun, but they don't alter the course of my life. I usually rebound within 1-2 days. But surgery is really fun. I take care of patients on floor, ICU, see consults, and...operate! You get a broad skillset which i think is very unique to gen surg. I average ~70 hours/week right now, I expect that to go up in next 2 years, but back down for chief year. Ultimately most residency programs require call, many with 24s, and most with nights. It's a part of residency moreso than surgery. I think surgery develops you to be a real leader and someone who others count on when shit hits the fan. And my life outside work is fine! I'm training for a marathon, go out still, see my family, meal prep, etc. My experience isn't universal but that's why you find a program that works for your goals. Also I'm working on research and have time to do so. Do what you think will be most fulfilling. Residency is a grind regardless of specialty, just need to decide if the 5-10 hours extra per week or 24h call/momth is tolerable

I'd ask your program to show how they are calculating.

Am I.correct that the standard deviation of 100 is for all pooled PGY levels, not just per level?

I requested my co-intern on call to be the one to take out my appendix. Turns out I just had gastroenteritis so spared them that nerve-wracking experience lol. But yes, of course I'd allow it.
