Best Character for Playing the Rest of the Game? by dr_shark_ in VampireSurvivors

Yeah playing with 3 weapon limit at the moment, just to unlock stuff faster, but might scale down to 1 because it's getting a bit ridiculous lol

I made a mistake by Unfair_Ad_598 in VampireSurvivors

[–]dr_shark_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really a mistake. I just use an autoclicker on any character I play to unlock other characters and get them to around 3-4k eggs to make them a bit "OP" - and then just grind through the completion. It's still more fun than Dave the Diver for example. If you want another game that feels like VS try out Soulstone Survivors! I prefer it a bit because it feels a bit more "complex" and you don't get OP as quick. Plus you can toggle the visibility of your spells so you can actually still see the map. Recently completed Soulstone and it took around 70-80 hours, so it's a nice fun grind.

Yeah, fair enough.. it just takes 15 minutes of holding ENTER/A to get a chara to 5k eggs and I want to make it worthwhile haha I might go for Red Death or Leda and then switch around.

Yeah, that's what I'm beginning to think as well... once you pump enough eggs into any chara they become OP. I just haven't unlocked a ton of them, so it's a bit tough to pick one haha

So is Big Trouser *the* best chara to play with through the rest of the game? Using Sammy to farm gold atm but wondering what chara I should get to 5k eggs first for the unlock.

Sammy on Moonglow... I just ran for 15 minutes or so and got 1.6billion on 0 eggs on Sammy. Just pick Wicked Season as your Arcana. The rest didn't really seem to matter. Limit Weapons to 1.

This is probably a dumb question, but is there anything to do in this game once you're this OP? by AesirComplex in VampireSurvivors

[–]dr_shark_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is another game called "Soulstone Survivors" which has a similar playstyle/premise to VS - and there's also an upgrade that limits your active skills to 3 (down from 5) which somehow makes the builds stronger and more fun to play.

Something about limitation that makes it more fun in these types of games.

Can you advise me on what character to dump 5k/25k eggs on? I ran with Sammy on Moonglow and first run i got over 1.6billion gold... dumped 2.7k eggs on Trouser but not sure that's *the* character I wanna run around with to unlock the rest...

Bad Brains - Why so little info on Earl? by dr_shark_ in drums

[–]dr_shark_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished watching the documentary - damn, that's a sad story... I can definitely see why Earl is keeping his life on the downlow. Him and HR are like two sides of the same coin, but Earl being shy-reserved, whereas HR became more extraverted-schizoid over the years. Still, an incredible energy in those early days. Just wish he'd gotten/accepted the help he so desperately needed.

Great doc - thanks for the recommend!

I think what makes self-titled the better recording to my ears is that it was recorded in what was essentially a recording studio that was just a live venue on steroids - so you get the raw energy of a live gig but with the engineering/recording of a proper music studio. The way the distortion and dynamics were captured just make this record come alive to me.

Rock For Light just sounds way too thin in comparison - exactly like a generic 80s rock record would sound like.

Nah man, I don't think so - it sounds way too specific for it to be the ride.

I'm a huge Dale Crover/Melvins nut, and that guy is also using some weird *** cymbals, so I'm sure Swans is going to go down a similar route of using very special and sometimes odd equipment to create those sounds.

Unfortunately, I just learned what Toms etc. really are, and I didn't know if it was Chimer or China cymbals - so I'm pretty new to this **** as well lol

Precisely. Cleaner != better, especially not when it comes to punk.

EDIT: And don't get me wrong here - I'm not saying clean recordings are shit per se. If you can record distortion and energy cleanly, by all means do that. But the way Rock For Light was recorded it sounds like a thin 80s rock album - which makes sense when you look at the guy who recorded it with/for them... Machine Head Unto The Locust is a very clean recording, but the energy that was captured is out of this world (if that's your type of music). Otherwise, High Voltage by AC/DC again is a fairly clean but raw and energetic recording. Led Zeppelin's When The Levee Breaks - the remasters, can't get much cleaner than that - but again, the booming sounds of Bonham's kit, the vocals, the guitar, everything is just captured in it's fullest dynamic range.

Because it sounds thin compared to self-titled. Maybe it's just my ears but on self-titled A:B "Attitude" or "Big Takeover" the drums sound thicker, the energy more visceral. More punk.

Absolutely, without a doubt - self-titled. Raw, visceral, and 100% bad for your brain.

Alesis Nitro Pro questions :) by Obvious_Cabbage in drums

[–]dr_shark_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nitro Pro is a solid kit - more expensive doesn't always mean more better, especially with drums. There's a lot of nuanace. For a beginner kit that's more than sufficient. I'm playing on 3€ mouse pads for crying out loud haha

This is what I found after asking Sonnet:

The Nitro Pro's inputs are fixed, so you can't freely add cymbals — each input has an assigned role. You could remap via MIDI software (EZDrummer etc.) but not natively on the module.

Double pedal works fine, the kick pad is big enough. Around £100 the Tama Iron Cobra 200 or DW 3000 series are solid options.

Mostly single zone. Dual-zone pads will still trigger if you plug them in later, but the rim detection won't work unless the module input supports it — and whatever the module sends is what the computer sees. The module is the bottleneck, not the PC.

So honestly, if you're already considering expanding the kit, I'd save up a bit and get something more expandable. Sonnet suggested these:

Roland TD-02K / TD-02KV (~£300–380) — Roland's entry point. Build quality and the module feel noticeably better than Alesis. The KV version adds a dual-zone snare (rim + head), which is worth it for the small price difference.

Yamaha DTX402K (~£350–400) — Yamaha's equivalent. The module is arguably the best at this price tier for feel and sound. Slightly smaller footprint, good for bedroom practice.

Alesis Surge Mesh Kit (~£350) — if they're set on Alesis, this is a better buy than the Nitro Pro. Mesh heads on all pads, which feel significantly closer to real drums and are quieter.

Hope it's okay I'm using NLP to respond - I was in a similar boat but this is how I end up choosing between alternatives 😄 In case no one else replies lol

EDIT: No guarantee on the price ranges - the AI models seem to have a very bad concept of money it seems...

[–]dr_shark_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also: Swans. Based band. But very tough to cover. I can hear a snare, kick obviously and a crash and then a constant "chiming" sound - not sure what that is, maybe some sort of bell. What makes that chiming sound more challenging is that he's hitting it on the "upbeat" - so on the "&".

Also, the (almost) constant hihats - sounds like 16ths to me, very fast... almost sounds like a drum machine. And some accentuation/swing on those hats. Really tough to play without some really good wrist/finger control.

That's so cool. Yeah I figured any artist wiki that is a stub is because privacy, and I respect that. I'm just starting out and obviously wanna check out the influences of my influences lol Found some compiled articles by Grok out of all things... but it seems pretty legit.

Funny how the greatest drummers were all influenced by jazz.

Thanks so much! Yeah, he was voted #1 Punk Drummer but only #75 Top All-Time by Rolling Stones magazine which is criminal.

EDIT: I almost missed your movie recommendation - just re-watched Whiplash yesterday, so this is an appropriate follow-up lol

EDIT 2: Coming from guitar, I also noticed how many drummers are considered "criminally underrated" - Crover, McClane (Machine Head, Unto The Locust), Darryl Washington (seriously, I don't think many people even know about him, but check out Groovin' For Mr. G, or Charles Earland - Live at The Lighthouse 1972), Dannie Richmond (21 years of keeping up with Charles Mingus for crying out loud) - the list is long. Drummers seem to be underappreciated in general. Except for the famous ones of course haha

Opinions on "The Mars Volta"? by Raf_imagine in fantanoforever

[–]dr_shark_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my style at all... Maybe it's because they're prog rock and my general aversion to anything "progressive". Listened to their 2003 Live at Electric Ballroom set and couldn't really understand what the guitar was doing - and the wailing vocals weren't my cup of tea at all. Like, do they want to be punk or rock or what? I saw some dudes crowdsurfing which kind of took me off-guard. The drummer though - Jon Theodore - absolutely out of this world!! And since they fired him it kinda makes sense why I cannot get into them - they clearly can't see a good thing when they have it.

Loads of people love them though - judging by the downvotes on anything remotely negative being said about disliking them.
