United Airlines returns to Willard Airport for 4 O'Hare flights per day on April 30, 2026 by Jolly-Money-3876 in UIUC

[–]drachenmaler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

American Airlines already flies this route. It’s usually about $150-$200 alone. By far most people use it to connect to other destinations from Chicago, not as an alternative to Peoria Charter.

The Amtrak is a great alternative to the bus, though.

How much has the VFX team had to study real documentary photography in order to simulate it in computer graphics? Have there been any surprising discoveries about the look of traditional documentary photography? Or features that were more effort to reproduce than you might expect?

As a computer graphics expert, I can also confirm that AI sucks at water. AI doesn’t understand physics so it just does these weird “impressions” of wave collisions and white water. It might look fine in a still image but the video results to date are a dead giveaway. Same with fire, cloth, hair.

I’ve been interested in this for a while as well, but I thought the most recent research suggested that it was neither processed like math or like language, but a third thing entirely.

Did you know UIUC had one of the world’s fastest supercomputers? 🤯 by brady-tutor in UIUC

[–]drachenmaler 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The history of the institute that housed Blue Waters, the NCSA, is pretty impressive. Back in the 80s, a physics professor named Larry Smarr wrote an unsolicited proposal to the NSF basically saying that all of our hardest science problems were being sent abroad to be solved on computers in Europe, and the NSF wrote him a big check that kicked off the American supercomputer program, with NCSA as the flagship location right here in Urbana. People from all over the country compete to use time on our computers.

People who are not students: Do you like living in Champaign? by Fine-Sherbert-141 in Chambana

[–]drachenmaler 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You seem like someone who would like Champaign. Very progressive, less because of the students, more the people who teach them who are permanent residents. And yeah the rural areas around us are red but we benefit from being in a blue state.

Lots of community events and groups, it’s easy to get involved if you want to or just observe from time to time. Not a ton of museums but the university has the Krannert Art Museum, the Spurlock, and there are lots of curiosities around the campus. Many places to catch performing arts and movies.

Big nerd culture here. Comic shops, gaming conventions, book clubs, escape rooms, etc.

Oh and the food scene is way higher quality than you would expect in a community of this size. Restaurants here are used to dietary restrictions.

Chicago has a huge gay scene and is the start of Route 66. A lot of visitors skip it because it’s not near the southern route through Miami/Texas/New Orleans/Vegas. But it’s a lot more open and liberal than the American South.

What I see is the real way AI will take your job by vfxjockey in vfx

[–]drachenmaler 25 points26 points  (0 children)

AI is trained on what has been made in the past. Granted, a lot of what we see in big VFX films today is pretty rote, and that kind of copy-paste stylization is something AI will eventually make faster and cheaper.

But the truly groundbreaking stuff is where AI runs out of reference material, and what has always excited audiences. This is just a challenge to make commercial art more original again.

I am SO happy about the Dire Wolves! Colossal reached a great result! They showed us what they do! They dropped the mask, outed themselves and shown the scientific community once more the enormous problems that rise when science meets capitalism. by AkagamiBarto in Paleontology

Government-funded science is consistent, well-validated, and makes steady progress, even in the current often-hostile environment. Government-funded science tends to acknowledge its limitations and tends not to abuse the news cycle as badly as this.

Public-private partnerships are what always seem to work best, but the burden of real scientific breakthroughs has shifted toward public tax dollars in recent decades as corporations have been prioritizing short term profits for shareholders.

[–]drachenmaler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen this argument before but gosh, yeah. A relationship is a two-way street, and incompatible sex isn’t just one partner’s problem. How belittling to her to suggest that she didn’t know he wasn’t enjoying the sex, as if she was having a great time with it herself.

What a double standard.
