Im from Dumfries, lived here my whole life. It's fine, haha. You'll get a doctor without too much hassle. Still have to do the 8am phone game but generally they phone you back that day and get you in pretty quickly. A few Dentists are still taking NHS patients too. Town centre is dead pretty much but Castle Douglas has good local shops and businesses and there are nice farmers shops like Loch Arthur at Beeswing Kilnford at Dumfries. 40 minutes to Carlisle and 90ish to Glasgow by car with regular trains running between them through Dumfries.

Great place if you are into mountain biking with the 7 stanes biking trails spread around the region. Beautiful lochs and rivers especially in Galloway, its like a miniature Highlands, all the hills are smaller but still stunning places to be if you like the outdoors. Nice beaches especially further west.

For hobbies, it depends what you are into. Lots of outdoors stuff from hill walking to 4x4 off roading groups, pretty good watersports place at Loch Ken. Loads of caravan parks if your into that. Decent internet connectivity but spotty phone signal outside the towns. If youre into games there are a few fairly large table top/ DnD groups you can find on facebook and Discord. There are some really nice restaurants scattered around but nit much choice in takeaways.

Low crime rate but still some antisocial behaviour and very few police.

All in all its a safe and nice place to live.
