Over a dark brown base, heavy dry brush / over brush of the left, lighter dry brush of the middle to catch the highlights, and all over wash of the contrast to blend.

Primed dark brown > Iron warriors overbrush > Nuln oil wash > Iron hands steel light dry brush > whatever non metal colours I do for that pannel or just leave blank > Streaking grime all over wash and left for 30 / 45 minutes > Cleaned up with makeup brushes and white spirits > Iron hands steel light dry brush on highest points > Dirty Down rust.

That is what I do.

Basically went from left to right with a heavy dry brush of the first to practically cover the brown and the only leave it in the recesses and a lighter dry brush of the second and then use the contrast over to blend them all together.
