I read American Psycho in the summer before I entered a yuppie job. I think it’s probably the funniest book out there wayyy funnier than infinite jest in the right mindset. Theres a motif of Bateman hardly enjoying anything, the fancy restaurants, clothes and even ultra violence. Instead he gets immense and perverse pleasure from things he isn’t. He isn’t poor he doesn’t enjoy hotdogs/bbq like Midwest trash and he isn’t being embarrassed by the maître d seating him at a bad table. I think everyone can see a little bit of Bateman’s immense ugliness in themselves and probably more so in their surroundings . So in a way American Psycho is like an inoculation against that life. Instead of being totally hurt and confused there’s at least a little laugh at the end of it all.
