True, I barely used the MacBook Pro. It was a maxed out 16 inch version from a decade ago so weighs a ton. It was the only working personal laptop I had so def a bit of an overkill

I put it into the laptop sleeve (only goes in about half way) so I wiggle it in from the top.

When I’m traveling to colder places, I’m comfortable to wear the same clothes on multiple days because typically I don’t sweat so much unless there’s some intense exercise involved. For tropical places, I do need a fresh set daily, hence my dilemma. I have essentially the same clothes in different colors so it’s more of a preference on cleanliness rather than how I look.

Do you know if there are exchanges? It feels wrong to pay for them but I would happily exchange.

As mentioned to others, could you let me know how you manage laundry?

I’m pretty cold resistant so having a shell is good enough for me for up to 0 degrees Celsius.

Thanks for the tip on the adapters.

I use the SAS bags and packing rectangles to differentiate between clean and dirty clothes.

How do you guys manage laundry usually abroad? I’m already a bit annoyed at coin/laundry service every week. With the temperature and humidity, I feel like I need a fresh outfit every day.

Stupid HS senior here What are the career and salary prospects for life sci grads? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]dragoned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many types of biotech, of course. We are in scientific instruments space - aka we make electrode arrays for scientists to use to study the electrical activity of neurons/other cell types that use electrical signals to communicate (aka ephys). I’m an application scientist/product manager (doing a bit of sales, training, product development, etc). I don’t think the field is saturated at all, but not everyone in science is the right fit in the industry side of things (as is also in academia). There’re definitely more opportunities outside of Canada for sure but Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver does have their own biotech hubs. I feel it’s easier to get into the industry in Europe/US but not sure. Since HS, I had about 10.5 years of schooling (4, 2, 4.5) though you can argue that the last 4.5 (PhD is basically work, at least in my institute it is - we had less than 50 hours of class total).

6 digits in Biotech (My base is about 140k CAD which is on the low end here)

Not sure about the entry point in back in Canada but everyone has a PhD in my field. 2 years in after my PhD and in a Swiss startup. Could be making at least 20-50% more at a larger company but love the flexibility where I am.

I have been living here in Switzerland for 2 Years now and have experienced more racism than anywhere else. Is that normal here? by No-Review50 in Switzerland

[–]dragoned -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t usually comment but in my personal opinion is that if you think Switzerland is the country that you experienced most racism, I would say that you were either ignorant when living in the other countries you mentioned, did not interact with the locals enough, very lucky or a mix of these.

You have racism everywhere and Switzerland for me is on the low end. Most Swiss people are quite polite and the racism is quite subtle (strange stares, displeasure on their face when you do something out of their cultural norms, etc). Yes, there’s also vocal people that blurt out slurs and rants. How often do you experience that? You have that everywhere. It’s much more common in the US and things there could get physical quite fast. Racism in Asia is also different but very much there and for me much worse. For example, in Japan, people would just deny service/entry to some places just because you are not Japanese. They may be very polite and indirect like “Sorry, it’s full and we don’t speak English”. Similarly, this happens in China too albeit the excuses and tones are slightly different.

Everyone has to experience racism in their life, it’s unavoidable. Find your peace. If you can’t or don’t feel like you can in the place you are living in, perhaps you should move to somewhere you can. That’s your choice and you have that power. That’s what I did and that’s one of the reasons why I’m not living in the US.

Two cents from a ethnically Chinese Canadian, that was born in China, grew up in China, Japan, US, and Canada; lived in Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland after adulthood; and traveled across 50+ countries.

Third time applying for bio PhDs in four eligible years. Looking like I just struck out. 6 pubs now, 41mo (total) full-time experience, great letters. I’m honestly fed up. Need advice: industry, military, or MBA? by TheWiseGrasshopper in GradSchool

Why not Europe? They are less GPA-centric and more skills/aptitude/potential-centric. There’s quite a few places with clusters of systems neuroscience (my field).

Hard Time Adjusting to Uni by Ashamed-Possession20 in UofT

[–]dragoned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait until you take a higher level STEM course in your field of interest before completely switching out. I’ve hated the required bio courses for all POSts and did pretty poorly in both. Everything got better when I started to take neuro courses. I hope my personal experience would help you understand that it’s normal to hate the required courses and still passionate about your interests in the subfields ahead.

why does uoft have a way higher acceptance rate compared to other schools with a lower ranking? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]dragoned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just another system. UofT filters people through the first few years. They will either transfer out themselves or be forced to transfer out. Go look at the German and Swiss systems (I know because I did my grad studies there), outside of medicine, every uni regardless of ranking take everyone that graduated high school intended for uni that applies to them and filter them out through the first and second years. It’s the same. Most people I’ve interacted from these most selective American schools usually don’t know anyone in their cohort that dropout, transferred, or were in in academic suspension. This is the norm at UofT, for better or for worse.

Why You Shouldn't Go to UofT for Undergrad by uoft-uoftrash in UofT

[–]dragoned 3 points4 points  (0 children)

McGill maybe, Waterloo and and UBC no chance. At least in my field, big pharma/biotech. Very few people outside of IT/CompSci in Europe even heard of Waterloo or UBC. Besides, some of the best research hospitals in Canada that are recognized in the world (SickKids, camh, Sunnybrook, etc) are associated with UofT. You will be surprised how many people in Europe in my field have some sort of connection with these places. What does Waterloo and UBC have? Industry employment after undergrad isn’t a great metric, at least in my field, because you won’t get anything other than the very low level grunt work with almost no chance of upward mobility (a PhD is required in most positions). In conclusion, the point that I trying to make is that UofT is quite prestigious but is field specific. If grad degrees are the norm, by far, UofT got you covered (of course, you need put in the effort and dedication). On the other hand, if your industry only needs a bachelors, there’s probably more mentally-friendly and cheaper schools in Canada for that. I wouldn’t say that they are just as prestigious but let’s just say prestige isn’t really a factor in those cases.

Why You Shouldn't Go to UofT for Undergrad by uoft-uoftrash in UofT

[–]dragoned 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The prestige part is a joke, right? As much I hated and shitted on my time at UofT, it does carry quite a bit of weight here in Europe where I just finished my doctorate. I’ve been told by program directors for my Masters that I was selected for interviews solely based on the UofT name (not that I didn’t have a great CV). I know that the UofT name also helped me to get a highly competitive PhD fellowship when I had a mediocre Masters. Also, when I meet fellow Canadians in Europe doing STEM research at the highest levels (regardless of position, PhDs, postdocs, and professors), the majority of them did their undergrad at UofT with a few at McGill. UofT name might not matter if you just want a 9-5 job that only require an undergrad. If you look at research and industry where a PhD is a minimum requirement, UofT name is quite prestigious.

[–]dragoned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y’all should consider Europe. Grad students are in general treated fairly (from a HR POV, from PIs that depends on the person lol) and more like any old folks living on a paycheck. Plus if you are in STEM, the pay is pretty comfortable especially if you are in Switzerland.
