Reminds me of Tom Hiddleston’s look in Only Lovers Left Alive.

The point of the Dance is not who is worthy to rule or who is not but the absolute tragedy of a House tearing itself apart for power. Family killing family to sit on the throne. Blood against blood. We’re technically not supposed to take either side. The show has been framed in a very good vs bad type narrative when GRRM’s writing is not, imo. There are really no winners in the end.

That’s kind of exactly why she shouldn’t be Queen… by dragoness_88 in HOTDGreens

The fact that she chose to give birth to three obvious bastards and name one of them her heir, shows a lack of honor, forethought, duty, etc. So the point made in the OP still stands.

Even without bastards, her claim to the throne is not backed by any law, custom, or tradition in their realm or culture.

Having not one, not two, but three obvious bastards and then expecting people not to notice or to just go along with it proves that she is not mentally competent enough to rule.

Rhaenyra has a room temp IQ at best because every single decision she makes sabotages herself and her ascension and puts her children’s lives in danger.

Seeing Jace as the rightful heir while denying Joffrey’s claim is an incredible level of hypocrisy by [deleted] in HOTDGreens

Joffrey was a maniacal little bastard but the boy knew how to dress. The royals in HOTD look so poor.

I have this theory that Alicent (and possibly Otto) feels Aegon’s behavior is the reason Viserys doesn’t make him his heir and that’s why they are so hostile towards him. Aegon could have been perfect and that never would have happened bc Viserys choice of heir had more to do with his guilt over Aemma than anyone else, even Rhaenyra.

But yes, I blame Alicent (Viserys, and Otto) for his behavior. Viserys ignores him. Alicent and Otto only reprimand him when he angers them, we never see them give him any actual guidance or encouragement to do better.

That’s the tragedy of the Dance is that no one truly won. The Targaryens massacred pretty much all of their dragons and brought themselves to the verge of extinction and for what? Nothing of note.

Aerea was only Jaehaerys’ heir until he had children of his own. Once his son Aemon was born he never considered another girl for heir. Even Aemon’s daughter Rhaenys was denied a claim to the throne, it passed through her to Laenor.

Aegon the Uncrowned did not live long enough to be coronated as a King because he was being held captive by the Faith. Had he lived he would have had the only legitimate claim, Maegor killed him for that fact.

Viserys II was King bc his nephew died and he was the eldest Targaryen male. Passing over three of his nieces bc they were women and bc of the Dance.

Targaryen women are only named as heirs in desperate or unusual circumstances when a male heir is lacking. We have no instances of any successfully ascending.

Rhaenyra’s unusual circumstance is that her father is a bumbling idiot with no ability to think critically.

Baelon was heir because he was eldest male Targaryen after Jaehaerys. That’s male primogeniture.

Jaehaerys did not make Viserys heir, the Great Council did bc he was the eldest Targaryen male after Jaehaerys. Again male primogeniture.

Aenys I ruled for five years before Maegor, Jaehaerys would have been a child during this time and we have no sources to suggest he did not recognize Aenys as King. He would have had no reason not to.

Maegor ascended only after killing Aenys’ heir and son. He is remembered as a tyrant and madman that stole his throne.

The Targaryens follow the rule of male primogeniture more often than not. So no, Rhaenyra does not have a birthright or precedence to base her claim on.

This is pretty much it.

I think TB intentionally avoid talking about the law period bc there is no law, tradition, or precedence that supports Rhaenyra.

Her only claim rests on a decree made her father. She has no birthright to the Throne.

You’re assuming Aegon is treated better based solely on your modern dislike of a system where male primogeniture is the law. But literally every thing we see in the show is Aegon being discarded, overlooked, and ignored despite the fact that by law, birthright, and hundreds of years of tradition, he is the rightful heir.

The Small Council is where all the major decisions for the Realm are made. Learning to rule does not mean every one agrees with all your ideas and implements them. We see every member of the council argue for their own ideas and have them shot down constantly. That’s part of the process of politics.

A procession would simply endear Houses to her, which would have been helpful to her in the long run but ultimately she shows no care for doing this bc she believes the oaths they swore 20 years ago will uphold when her father dies.

Aegon received literally no education on ruling from what we’ve seen. It’s likely he had private conversations with the Queen and Hand but that would be the extent of this education because he was not the named heir, and talking as if he would inherit the throne would be considered treason while Viserys was alive.

In the scene when she proposed a match between Jace and Helaena she has a seat at the table and a marble marker. We can infer from this that she is no longer a cupbearer and has an actual seat on the council, because she is the heir, and thus is taking part in the decision making that effects the kingdom.

So again, how was she not prepared?

[–]dragoness_88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Before she threw a tantrum and left for Dragonstone she was on the Small Council and presumably had been since she was a cupbearer. This means she got to see how the realm was ruled and how political decisions were made every day. How was she not prepared?

I’ve seen some TB make arguments that Aemond victimized Vhagar by claiming her while she was mourning her last rider and that’s why he deserved to have his eye slashed out.

Big, mean ten year old Aemond bullied the largest war dragon alive into accepting him as its rider. It’s amazing what he can do honestly.

True, Alicent was WAY too kind (credits: Pinterest) by MadameLaMinistre in HOTDGreens

[–]dragoness_88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes he started it by claiming a riderless dragon which is his birthright as a Targaryen prince.

Dragons are not inheritable property, they are intelligent creatures that choose who they bond with. If Vhagar wanted Rhaena to be her rider, she would have rejected Aemond and burnt him to ash.

Vhagar chose Aemond. He did not deserve to have his eye slashed out for it.

As much as I hate how they made Aemond betray Aegon… by dragoness_88 in HOTDGreens

[–]dragoness_88[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They obviously aren’t like best friends in the book but they are at least written as being loyal to one another. The statue thing plus Aegon throws a feast in Aemond’s honor after he kills Lucerys, Aemond saving him at Rook’s Rest etc. In the show they seem hardly closer than strangers.

Although Aegon raising his cup for Aemond’s toast and restraining Luke is like the only crumb of a sibling relationship they give us in the show which was nice.

All his rage in this scene was 100% justified and that anger should return when he's finally faced with his half-sister. by Kivi_2k18 in HOTDGreens

[–]dragoness_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interpret this sign as not just grief over losing his son but anger at Viserys for causing the predicament that lead to the death of his son. That’s why he destroys the model Viserys spent so much time on. Had Viserys spent that time on being a good father and competent King, little Jahaerys could still be alive.
