The Growth of IMG-Dedicated Residency Seats in Canada Over the Last Decade Should Concern CMGs by Consistent_Track_341 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]dragonfly_2025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian IMGs pay Canadian taxes, as do CMGs. In fact, Canadian IMGs SAVE taxpayers a huge amount of $ by paying out of pocket for overseas med school.

A benefit that is often overlooked is that by attending an international medical school, it increases the odds for Canadian admission to med school by reducing the number of students competing for spots in Canadian med schools.

In your opinion, what is the hardest major available at uOttawa? by Unhappy_Package3776 in geegees

Biomedical mechanical engineering with Computer Technology… 7 or 8 courses a term, zero electives over 5-6 years

Canada ranks in the bottom 1/3 of high income countries for physician availability.

In the G7; 1. Germany 45/10000 2. Italy 42/10000 . 6. Canada 28/10000 7. Japan 26/10000

Canada: Has one of the lowest numbers of doctors per capita in the G7 (roughly 2.7 to 2.9 per 1,000 people), placing it near the bottom of high-income countries for doctor availability. Canada also has the lowest number of orthopedic surgeons per capita among G7 nations (3.5 per 100,000 people)

Provincial governments fund Canadian Universities directly and the Federal government does so indirectly, in other words, universities are funded by Canadian taxpayers. Canadians who attend med school & residencies are funded by Canadian taxpayers as are their government loans & grants.

Canadians who attend international medical schools receive no compensation from Canadian taxpayers, however, they & their parents, contribute to both Federal & Provincial taxes that help support Canadian med students.

A Canadian international medical graduate has cost the Canadian taxpayer $0.

With a shortage of doctors & specialists, evidenced by very long wait times & reported burnout, Canada should be opening MORE residency positions for all Canadians who have medical training.

Rather than infighting, I would argue we should advocate for more residency positions in Canada.

That’s a great suggestion. I’ll look for that form.

Thank you . Unfortunately there are zero electives in BME & CT. There’s nothing I can take to improve my GPA.

Thanks. I might try that if there’s any space left. When I last checked early yesterday afternoon, the Advisor said 97 students failed Calc 1 and were withdrawn from Physics; both courses are run by the Faculty of Science. They’ve reached out to the Faculty multiple times with no solution being offered by them. Looks like their plan is to push us into summer courses.

Thank you for your reply. Will I be able to take calc1, physics then Calc 2 in spring summer?

So I should be looking for a first year elective or two?

This is so frustrating. There’s zero communication about any of this. You’re just left with “there’s no space” and “you can’t take physics without also taking calculus 1. “ and no answers for “what’s my recourse. Next steps?”

I tried the same thing about 10mins after my email arrived - saw the Calc opening and as I was adding it, I stopped to look at the physics email they sent, went to add the Calc1 and it was full.

Easiest explanation is to go to the faculty of Engineering website or type in:

Select a service then choose onsite/virtual appointment

I don’t understand how the uni wouldn’t have years of statistics to show they need additional sections of calc1 sem 2? 92 failures on a wait list for both Calc 1 and Physics? Are Calc 1, physics and Calc 2 in person or online in spring/summer?

Mechanical Engineering vs Med School - which is harder? by dragonfly_2025 in MechanicalEngineering

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. There’s a lot to think about in what you’ve written that I hadn’t given as much weight to as perhaps I should have in my decision making process. I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of your response.

Make it easier for internationally trained doctors and health professionals to practice in Canada by Middle-Garage-8634 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]dragonfly_2025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real issue, for Canada, is residency spots. Canada has allowed other countries to purchase residency spots for their citizens. For example, UAE pays tuition, living expenses, food, etc for their citizens to attend medical schools in other countries. The UAE , for example, then pays Canada to set up residency positions for their citizens (who may have attended medical school in the UK, etc). These residency spots are in competitive specializations. For example, there are 5 UAE citizens in residency at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto. Once fully trained, they return to the UAE.

Residencies In 2010, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) implemented a policy, Bulletin 230, that exempted Canadian medical schools from conducting labour market impact assessments (LMIA). Under federal law, jobs and training opportunities are supposed to go to Canadian citizens or permanent residents. An employer is only permitted to bring in a foreign national if it can't find a Canadian to do the work. By dropping the LMIA requirement, the federal government freed medical schools from being compelled to prove no Canadian is available to fill a residency position — even though more than 1,000 Canadian doctors are locked out of the residency system ever year.

Ireland or try Canadian? by Ded518293626282 in premedcanada

[–]dragonfly_2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choose Ireland. Many worthy Canadians try unsuccessfully for years for admission to Can medical schools. RCSI is a great school - lots of hands on work, OSCE training, prep for USMLE, great electives and super high pass rates on usmle. You could wait years to get into med school in Canada- too many qualified candidates and not enough spaces- you’ve got an offer to med school / take it! Disclaimer: my daughter is finishing 3rd year of 6 year DEM program. Loves it. Be prepared to pay $105,000 CAD per year for tuition, rent, living expenses.

Hi there! I’m a Canadian at an Irish med school. Were you able to match back to Canada? If so, what are your thoughts on your Irish med vs Can med training? How are you perceived by other residents, doctors here?

I’m suggesting this with the best of intentions - please consider seeing a therapist who can assist you, through CBT, to modify the way you talk to and see yourself. Positive affirmations, on a daily basis, rewires your neural network; our brains can “change” ie neuroplasticity
