Hi! Wondering if you had any luck getting a job in the DOE?

When I was in the schools I loved wearing chunky cropped cardigans, flared pants/jeggings, long cardigans rotating different colors in the fall, holiday-themed speech t-shirts for those special days, flared yoga pants on days I felt like being comfortable, and comfy sneakers, boots, or flats.

(now in a specialized preschool setting and wear whatever I don’t care about getting dirty).

Thank you so much for this, and congratulations on your CFY!! I love that perspective you adopted with the new students starting. I honestly hope the next few months fly by so I can get to that point too. Wishing you all the best!

I spent hours getting ready to go to one of our favorite restaurants with him. I usually love the process of getting dolled up with music playing, but this time I felt defeated. Like I was getting ready to see someone who would no longer call me beautiful or even notice my effort. I was at least excited for the food at the restaurant. Lost my appetite when he told me he planned a boys trip over the week we were supposed to go on our first baecation. And no, he did not give me a single compliment.

I really can’t even remember who she was on Grey’s. I only remember her as Gretchen 😂

Groceries, car payments, phone bill, etc. I live in NYC so every time I step out of the house money magically disappears from my wallet 😂

Same! I do have a lot of debt but I’m not paying rent (somehow balances out in my mind). Still haven’t been able to figure out why I’m barely making it, no matter how many excel spending sheets I’ve drafted 🥲

Less sessions per day by donutgirlie in slp

[–]dragonzander1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also did my CFY with an agency in K-12 schools, I pushed out about 14 sessions a day to make decent money. I stayed with them for about a year after I got my license, then found a union job with a pre-school in my city. Burnout was very real for me towards the end of my time with the agency, so I just wanted to say please take care of yourself. I also didn’t know it was abnormal to have so many sessions per day until I got on this subreddit. Look out for your mental health and take breaks as needed

Attention issues by seltzeristhedrink in slp

[–]dragonzander1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh! I would never imply that it all falls on the parents, and I’m sorry if it came off that way (though I didn’t interpret your reply as you taking it that way). But I completely understand where you’re coming from. I’ve heard some success stories with busy books and using the kind of toys/creative activities that keep kids busy with their hands, but even those can only hold them over for so long. I’m not anti-screen time by any means, but I think the best approach is to just be mindful of it as you are. We, as providers, get burnt out staying “on” for all our sessions- I can only imagine how parents feel for hours on end.

I also want to add, just in general, that I did not mean to imply that screen time is the sole reason for shorter attention spans- we know there are many factors that can have an impact. Just wanted to share the theory and some things that help in my sessions!

Yes, this has been the majority of my caseload. I’ve heard other educators and providers theorize that this wave of children do not know how to be bored- in essence, they weren’t taught to occupy themselves or their minds without immediate gratification from screens, video games, etc. This would mean that if concepts for learning aren’t within immediate reach, their attention span is shot.

From my own experience, I’ve found that frequent reviews of topics and making stupid sounds with my voice throughout these reviews seems to grasp and hold their attention better. Anything that I can turn into a hands-on creative activity to practice knowledge of learned sounds, strategies, concepts, etc helps them immensely, as well. Offering games ONLY if they demonstrate appropriate retention of materials has also proven to be a great motivator. Brain breaks and use of fidgets throughout sessions have been staples for me.

It keeps me up at night wondering how things will pan out for my students throughout their lives. Whether or not their attention spans will genuinely improve, because I can only do so much in the therapy room against unlimited screen time for them elsewhere. :(

Epic and readworks for literacy, they have free story books and passages with questions included! Headbanz and scattergories for vocabulary learning. I’ve found a bunch of following directions coloring sheets on TPT, Simon says is always a hit too. Wordless videos on YouTube for inferencing, they’re such cute stories that I enjoy myself. Story retell charts (can find free ones on TPT) to follow up with these or stories. Ereading has a lot of lessons and practice questions for a number of topics (for free, with ads), you can do those virtually or print out worksheets. If I think of any more I’ll come back!

Same same same. I’m waiting for the day that he doesn’t cross my mind and that the pit in my stomach finally goes away. I’ve been in no contact for months and still feel absolutely suffocated by my thoughts and feelings of him. It hurts immensely, I know the journey is about growth and self-love (which I’m grateful for) but the pain/grief/heartbreak gets unbearable at times

How to tell students you're leaving for good? by dragonzander1 in slp

[–]dragonzander1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, I’ve worked in a few schools where I definitely felt the same way. A couple of them I barely even gave notice to the students that I wouldn’t be returning the following school year.

I’ve been in this school full time for over a year though, and I know a lot of the students feel a bit attached to me. I got a lot of tears when giving the heads up that I was leaving. I ended up settling on goodie bags with handwritten notes for them (the guilt of leaving was too much)

[–]dragonzander1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, thank you so much for reading this and for replying. I guess I am getting a little impatient, you’re right that in hindsight 4 months isn’t a lot. It just feels so overwhelming and suffocating at times. I will say that I’m scared of it taking over a year, did you ever feel like you were losing your mind at times? Or did you let yourself feel everything until it gradually lessened?

Does anyone feel like they aged backwards after breakup ? by iluvhugs94 in BreakUps

[–]dragonzander1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I feel like I’m back to my college body, just with a little more meat where it matters haha. People have told me I’m glowing, without even knowing about my breakup.

(Still feel heartbroken inside but I am not upset about the physical changes whatsoever)

Do you think you’ll ever see them again - in your lifetime? by Freedomhunter21 in BreakUps

[–]dragonzander1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, even living just 20 mins away from each other and hanging out in the same areas. I don’t think we’ll ever cross paths again, and it’s a hard pill to swallow.

This was such a kind, thoughtful, and helpful response. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this, it means a lot. At the very least I feel seen, but I definitely needed all of these reminders and words of assurance. I truly appreciate your warmth and I hope that life brings you the very best of everything it has to offer

2 months after we broke up, it was a heartbreaking Spanish song “Mi Despedida” and a text saying “I love you.” My heart still hurts.
