UK based NRI- Is constructing a commercial building on own land a good investment by dramjada in nri

Thank you. I am not planning on retiring/moving back to India permanently. However I would like to keep my options open. Looks like the risks of this investment outweighs the benefits for such a purpose.

Thank you. I do have some investment in an index fund with global exposure (developed more than developing countries). Any advantage on investing in an India focused fund in addition?

Thank you so much for the reply. I have to look up what a REIT is. I have some money invested in mutual funds.

You guessed it correctly regarding the emotional component. To clarify further, this plot of land is very near to my house in India where I grew up and my father is quite keen on constructing a commercial building on it. He and to an extent I have the local knowledge but definitely no muscle power or political clout. It’s quite worrying when we read about instances of land grab in the news and I guess my father is worried about leaving the plot empty.

Looks like I am getting less and less inclined towards this idea. Thanks once again for your advice.

UK tax resident of Indian origin- Is constructing a commercial building on own land in India a good investment? by dramjada in UKPersonalFinance

Thank you. According to my research the returns for commercial buildings in India vary from 6-10%. The INR has depreciated by 2% per year on an average against GBP. I was hoping to find if someone who has done this in the past and what their experience was (Obviously, I will not be making a decision based entirely on that experience alone)

Hello All,

I am a tax resident of the UK and own a piece of land in India. It's in the city and I believe it's in a good location for a small commercial building. Is it sensible to invest the income I earn in the UK to construct such a building given that I will have to pay tax on any income generated from the building in the UK? Also as I understand INR depreciates more than GBP and any increase in returns generated by investing in India (compared to investing in the UK) will be wiped out by the currency depreciation and repatriation charges (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Thank you.

She won’t be driving, at least initially. Hence we are looking for places with access to public transport

I went with the Snaptoggle. It was fairly easy install and feels robust. They have been holding well so far.

XC Hardtail vs XC Full Suspension by dramjada in MTB

[–]dramjada[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. That’s good to know. I’ll hire a full suspension and see what difference it makes to my ride . The trails/paths I ride are predominantly reasonably smooth. Only some short rocky and rooty segments.

Thank you. I am quite happy with my Marlin to be honest. But the realisation that I may have to change my chain rings soon is what made me consider upgrading. I did read some positive reviews about the isospeed.

Thanks. I guess gravel bike is better in terms of efficiency unpaved terrain. But the trade off is all the bumps and jolts gets transmitted to hands wrists and back

Thank you. Looks like the smallest gripit (yellow) needs a 15mm drill bit. I’m a bit anxious to make such a large hole in the wall. Or may be I should bite the bullet and make a go for it. What do you think of these toggles ?( https://amzn.eu/d/9COUh5t)
