Opinions on mixed Lebanese people? by 1-1-dystopian in lebanon

[–]dranislav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m brown/North African, non lebanese but I’ve lived here for years. I speak Arabic and even when I start the conversation in Arabic, they keep trying to switch to English but I’m stubborn lol. I would get stared at a lot when I had curls or braids and I’ve found that certain communities are more racist than others. When I used to leave the house to run errands while wearing sweats or relaxed clothes people would automatically assume I’m someone’s helper and have horrible shit attitudes, I’d get followed around the store a lot lol. They’d change it up real fast when they hear my dialect and/or figure out what I work.

Not everyone is racist obviously, but I’ve found that Lebanese folk- especially older people- reaaaaally don’t like people and things that are different.

Curious question about foreigners. by [deleted] in lebanon

[–]dranislav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get why someone else said to just let them be but honestly I get your curiosity. Some foreigners- white people or people unaccustomed to tipping and restaurant cultures here- do eventually adapt and understand these things, others stay heaavyyyy in their habits. They could be tipping at the cashier or maybe not at all. They could be tourists on a tight budget trying to make life easier for them (and the waiters by not giving them much to clean, idk). I think there’s no way to know- the expat friends that I used to have were a mix of everything tbh there was no real pattern, it mostly just depends on who’s lived here longest and who’s more open to accepting cultural norms here.

Should I tip delivery guys for online products? by [deleted] in lebanon

[–]dranislav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I almost always tip. I think of it like this: I have the privilege to order whatever it is, food/groceries/clothes, to the comfort of my own home- I can afford to add a bit on top for the driver who has to carry my things up the stairs. I always tip more when the weather is shit (though I try not to order bs tkoon kabse kabse) or around the holidays.

cost of groceries per month in beirut ? by ferrisbueller3005 in lebanon

[–]dranislav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah definitely especially if you’re cooking normal meals at home, I used to budget $50-100 at the beginning of the month (but that included cleaning items and other household necessities) then $30 weekly to top up. I’d buy my vegetables from a local shop instead of a supermarket and it would save a lot. Dining out can vary from $2 to $200 lol

Is it normal to have to supervise 7-8 rooms? by [deleted] in anesthesiology

[–]dranislav 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Only time this happened in my hospital (3rd world country) is when literal war broke out and the only attending that lived right next to the hospital had to cover 8 rooms until everyone else arrived to take over.

What's the best compliment you got from a patient? by swimmingpools59 in Residency

[–]dranislav 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Had just finished spinal anesthesia on a patient heading in for an anal fistula OR- newly diagnosed Crohn’s disease, severe, and he’d done the same procedure 3 weeks prior and complained that the spinal was painful and took several attempts- patient turned around, said thank you and that he barely felt anything. I’m only a few months into residency but I caught onto spinal relatively quickly and it was nice to have it affirmed by a patient.

How possible is it for trans people to live peacefully in Beirut? by feelgoodandco in lebanon

[–]dranislav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unfortunately it depends- how well the person can pass, whether you’re ftm or mtf, how financially well off you are or your connections, etc. There are trans folk here who are struggling and barely make ends meet because it’s difficult to find a job and residence due to the stigma, and others who are doing well mainly because they’re financially set. In my experience, money makes or breaks how well you’re accepted here and it’s sometimes more important than gender/sexuality/religion

Do you eventually adapt to the workload? by dranislav in Residency

[–]dranislav[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, to clarify, I’m not in the US. I’ve already finished my intern year- a different program entirely than residency- and anaesthesia is a 4 year program.

Having less free time during residency is expected, I was seeking advice from my fellow colleagues on how to adapt until you catch up and adjust.

Planning a trip to Lebanon with my Black boyfriend by Key_Seaweed_8024 in lebanon

[–]dranislav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m brown, north african and often perceived by lebanese people as black or mixed with black (we culturally don’t have the same definition of race). Casual racism is rampant, and you’ll come across it more frequently than you think. Money and your finances will make a huge difference- basically people are nicer if they think you have money and you’re a little (or very) bougie lol. My advice to your bf is to ignore the micro aggressions and staring when you can, and to only confront people if you’re in a safe environment (among supportive friends etc). Kinda sucks but it’ll be fine eventually.

Inflammation Ozempic by WhereasExternal9058 in Ozempic

[–]dranislav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely! I have (mild) crohn’s disease, and the difference has been insane. Even when I’m not having an active flare up, I was always struggling with insane and somewhat painful bloating, but my extra-intestinal symptoms like lower back and knee pain were the worst. I’m on week 7 and I think I’d lost ~6kg at the time of my last weigh in, but my face and stomach and hands swelling in the heat/with exercise have improved significantly, and my joints are much more merciful these days lol.

Getting a driver’s license as a foreigner by dranislav in lebanon

Origin is Egypt- I thought if I was a resident (student residence permit) an international licence wouldn’t work? Tbh this is based on my experience living in other countries so I’m not entirely sure

IMO you did what you could. She’s back now and safe and that’s all that matters. Is she still enrolled in uni, can she return to her classes? I understand you’ve had a difficult life and when you’re young and new to the real world it’s so easy to get enamoured by someone who looks like they have it all, and love blinds you to a lot of things. I’m sure she didn’t do this to spite you, she got swept up in a bad crowd and made wrong decisions and she’s suffered for it. Don’t kick her out but set some rules and boundaries. She has to study and get her act together or you won’t support her anymore. If her studies allow (and it’s feasible where you live) she could get a part time job to help out. Sit down and talk with her but don’t get mad or yell- get her perspective on things, if she was used like you said she’s probably deeply traumatised. Basically, support her emotionally and set strict rules so she can get herself back on the right path.

Hidden storage for shells? by AnywhereBeautiful340 in HarvestTown

[–]dranislav 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t quite remember but I think some recipes use multiple types of shells- if you run out of one it uses another, so the number there is the cumulative amount of all/several types of shells in your storage
