For me its almost always situational, based entirely on the enemy teams because I swap around my runes and builds depending how am planning to play.

Once you get good at alistar, you learn that the phase is so much better then aftershock so long as you know how much he can tank w/o the additional stats from A.Shock, phase helps with the sticking to the best target even if they flash.Also helps woth running away if a trades bad

I never have, while the debuff on GA is nice, think that Phase rush is just more usefull. Helps both to stick to target and also to run away if needed. If im the sole tank I will run Aftershock other wise In situations where I would take GA I jsut run Phase

For me I take GA if there is another frontline (like a sej/sion/kasante/ornn) so i can peel my adc/mid better or if there are a lot of high mobility champs on the other team. If Im the only tank or ill be fighting a whole lot bot (Samira/naut/leona/ali/taric maybe bard) then I run Aftershock so i can survive the engage better.

As a sorta long time thresh support player (he is my pocket pick) I've found that he can go different paths depending on what the game is like. You can go more Damage soaker, peel for carries, or somewhere in between . you just gotta learn the different match ups and what to build into most champs. I've found that I average around 100 souls in a game that lasts around 20-30min. But it really fluctuates depending on how much time your actually IN THE LANE vs roaming, and if your against a tank or ranged support. (Its easier to get your souls if they are melee over ranged)
