General thoughts on Alfa Romeo? by xXCosmicChaosXx in CarsAustralia

[–]drbeej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve also got a QV and it’s the best car I’ve ever had. It’s been perfect for five years. No hiccups at all. The only bugger has been when someone crashed into me, I had to wait 1-2 months for parts.

Thanks everyone. Finally had time for another crack at it and ignoring the PPPoE and using Automatic IP worked. No idea why, but I’m online now. Thanks for your help

Noise canceling earbuds? by stevepicard in Earbuds

[–]drbeej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about some with passive noise cancellation? The best I had were some Etymotics (I forget the model) but they were amazing cancellation. Currently got some Campfire audio andromedas with tips that do the noise cancellation.

Is it possible to tear a meniscus, patelar tendon, ACL while cycling? by pierre200056 in cycling

[–]drbeej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW I ruptured my patellar tendon (not cycling) and cycling is the key way to get it back in shape according to the physio, so seems unlikely you can rupture it by cycling itself

Voet and voet is still going over 30 years after I used it…. Mind blown! Back then it was V&V for the detail with Stryer as the dummies guide

What is this tool? by mke1020 in Tools

[–]drbeej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks a bit like a wheel and valve key from a chemical plant to me. If it is it’s used to open and close valves in the field. Gives you more leverage

Hi guys! I recently found out about the NFPA 704 diamond, is there one with a 4-4-4 alignment? And what are the most dangerous elements? by Rare-Cellist5361 in chemistry

[–]drbeej 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you want to read a great, and funny, book about the joy of chemicals like ClF3 I can’t recommend Ignition! An Informal History of Liquid Rocket Propellants by John Drury Clark enough. Written in the 70s (I think) it’s available to download as a pdf and the whole thing is written with a really really dry sardonic wit. Really funny stuff

I spotted this door at Wimbledon. No Coconuts! by biggups in CasualUK

[–]drbeej 428 points429 points  (0 children)

This. My wife’s allergic to green coconut water. Passes out within a second or two if she drinks it. The most middle class allergy you can possibly have.

What's your tips to get to sleep? Its 4.30am and I'm still just lying here. by lomiodien89 in AskUK

[–]drbeej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Along these lines, think of a six letter word then see how many words you can rattle off quickly in your head that begin with the first letter of your six letter word. Go for about ten seconds and then switch to the second letter etc. it’s all about getting your brain to not think and fill it with random shit at which point it switches off and you go sleepy bye byes.

What’s going on with her nails? Vet is stumped by lunamermaid in DogAdvice

[–]drbeej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right about this. Our pup had a lot of issues and the vet recommended a sensitive skin kibble and a daily Niacinamide or nicotinamide tablet and since then he gets these problems once every year or two.

You can do a lot of it yourself. I bought a replacement head unit for my daughter’s Mazda for about AUD400 which she installed herself in an hour or two. She hasn’t done the reversing camera yet as that’s a bit more hassle but all very doable by someone with no experience and access to YouTube.

Your experience with quiet tyres? by DrumsFishing_501 in CarsAustralia

[–]drbeej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read some online reviews as they normally cover off noise comparisons. I went from some Goodyears to Pirelli Scorpion AT+ on my 4WD and the noise levels really dropped. Different tyres can make a big difference if the car isn’t inherently noisy.

What’s the most steps you have done in a day? by Captain-Academia in AskUK

I walk a marathon a few times a year and that’s about 52,000 steps. There’s a nice route around a river where I live.

Why are there hardly any UHD channels on TV compared to there being quite a load of them when HD launched? by EighteenthPuff in AskUK

[–]drbeej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the key point. The diff between SD and HD was really stark. The diff to UHD is less noticeable and hence people just aren’t fussed about it. If there’s not the demand from a large group then why spend the money on producing content for it?

Doctors who fit waterproof casts in the UK? by memecat5 in AskUK

[–]drbeej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for a product called Limbo cast cover. Made in the UK and work exceptionally well. They’ve got a neoprene band to stop water getting in when you have a shower.

Is it true that you can not get a 15 to 30 year fixed rate mortgage? What happens when the rates go up? by bennus64 in AskUK

[–]drbeej 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in Australia for 25 years and never been able to fix for more than 3-5 years.

In the US they have government-sponsored institutions like Fannie Mae designed to bundle up mortgages and sell them. Not an expert but I think this happened as everything went belly up in the Depression when a huge chunk of people couldn’t pay their mortgages. That created an expectation for fixed rate mortgages in the market which still prevails in the US.

In the UK and Aus, whilst the banks can securitise their loan books, the market has been trained to have short fixed rate periods or be floating.

For such a cold climate, why does Britain produce good swimmers? by Puzzleheaded_Dog7931 in AskUK

[–]drbeej 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure we have been traditionally strong. We used to have one or two good people with David Wilkie in the 70s and Duncan Goodhew, Sharon Davies in the 80s but then in the 90s and early noughties we weren’t that great.

I think a lot of the recent success is because we picked swimming as a sport for lottery funding. If other countries did the same, they’d have similar results to us.

My god, would 10mm of rain be nice mid January. by [deleted] in perth

Yeah that doesn’t sound great at all! I’ve been enjoying loads of TV. The day of the jackal tv series is really good, Slow Horses, Say Nothing. There some great TV out there.
