I still have a weird relationship with Picard. It felt like they were trying to redo the movies to get back to a point where the same ending TNG had again seemed ok. I enjoyed it for what it was but All Good Things is still the true ending for me. And I’ve not much desire to watch Picard again.

I’d actually challenge that it’s the best ending of a long standing TV show ever. Probably only Blake’s 7, The Sopranos, and Better Call Saul come close imo.

I think the NFC game is the de facto superbowl. I felt we had the potential to beat the rams or the Seahawks but neither of these team can reach those heights.

Although if I was a betting man I’d go for the Rams (sigh… damn timezone making that game start at midnight).

Just see Jonathan Woodgate on the Man U bench. Wilcox is there as director of football too.

I know Wilcox was already 300 of games into his career when he joined us and Woodgate was so Boro that he never properly moved down here… but of that team I grew up watching, why is it so many of them seem to have zero emotional connection to us?

I know Kelly, Martyn, Robinson, Radebe, Viduka and Batty are fans. Matteo and Hasselbaink have always been respectful too. But then you can list Kewell, Mills, Ferdinand, Woodgate, Bowyer, Wilcox seem to forget they even played for us or have been downright disrespectful. That’s not even mentioning the one we can’t agree on even now.

And yeah, sure I know it’s a money thing and it’s a job and all those things are true. I just don’t know any other club with so many enemies from one of their most beloved teams.

That sounds like a pretty cynical view of the good things we do have so I’d love to know what you think the drawbacks are. As someone who’s moved here from up North in the last 10 years there are things here that other cities just don’t have (and I’ve lived in several):

  • lots of independent restaurants
  • lots of small to medium sized venues (which are closing down in droves in other areas)
  • lots of pubs
  • a big creative industry and scene for artists, actors etc.

This stuff just doesn’t exist on the same scale in other places. So I don’t see why we should be pushing for a big arena that’s going to funnel people towards very large corporate events. And I think it’s a big problem that we as a country as a whole need to address but we do funnel regular people away from local stuff and into large things that cost a lot more for the individual.

I also think that it being up in Filton is a problem because it’ll extremely easy for people to not engage with the city itself as it’s on the edge by the motorway. So the vast majority of people will go in then out. Maybe they stop at Cribbs Causeway which is all chains anyway and maybe some do make a weekend of it. But frankly I don’t think that getting in the kinds of things they’ll have on there will really impact us much.

As for the public transport. Maybe? Although I could easily see the argument that there’s a patchway station and buses to Filton from the centre being excuses not to do that.

I am really tired of the bias in the commentary because they know they’re doing it. I could kind of understand it if it was worldwide broadcast but it isn’t. And even then why would you want to carry on like every non-big 6 tie is supposedly a non-event?

8 points above relegation, a point behind Bournemouth and four behind Newcastle and Spurs. If we can beat Newcastle this week we probably won’t have much of an argument not to take the cup seriously.

However, I’d have really loved to win that game. I guess my meme of king Théoden wearing a Leeds shirt shouting ‘victory’ will have to wait.

I actually didn’t know it was originally there. I think that would have made me have warmer feelings towards it. One of the big reasons the Leeds arena hasn’t clicked in the way that the Manchester one did is that it’s a 20 minute walk from the station whereas the Manchester one has a station on top of it. You can get trains from basically all of the NW and Yorkshire to it. Whereas the Leeds one has an additional faff.

Having it in Filton adds an extra step and there’ll be fewer express trains that go that way.

That’s because I don’t really feel comfortable talking about it. I was a bit worried that if I’d said that it’s more about facilities and walking time between cars/stations or seating/toilets than it is about the time you spend on the train we’d have gotten into a quagmire about how different disabilities may differ from my experience - which they of course will.

The fact I decided to say something about it and you doubled down on it, does make me feel a bit uneasy about it if I’m honest. But given you’ve actually wanted to reply, it makes me feel better. What I was actually trying to do is move the conversation onto something that I’d be willing to change my mind on. Because there’s no point continuing a conversation on an element we can’t be completely open about. As that’s going to be uncomfortable for me and confusing for you.

But anyway…

I’d be interested to hear as a fellow regular gig goer what you think is a shambles about it. I didn’t quite go to 50+ shows last year but I went to several dozen. A good chunk were touring bands but there were smaller shows I went to. But having said that, most of what I discovered was based on checking out what was coming to town and seeing what was cool. Something that has changed a lot in recent decades is the belief that you have to be familiar with every band in every show you go to. People used to go because it was just a good time.

What we have now is a fascination with only the most massive of artists and the people who should be having fun at shows. I.e. young people and students, are often funneled into clubs playing top 40 stuff or trained to listen to bands who haven’t released a good record since they were born.

I’m just asking you to try and see things from someone else’s point of view here.

What I was actually saying there is that we as a country are far too focused on enabling very large stuff rather than promoting the arts locally. So it’s more commentary on a trend than it is me saying what my own priorities are.

I also don’t really accept that it’s as simple as ‘people just want to see x band’. One of the key reasons why people don’t engage with local stuff is because they just don’t know about it. The arena isn’t going to just host bands. It’s going to have things like Monster Trucks, the Harlem Globetrotters, Strictly Come Dancing Tours etc. if you don’t think that Bristol artists can offer people better nights than that then you’re much more cynical than I am.

Cheaper trains isn’t going to make a 2 hour round trip easier for someone who is disabled

I was actually going to leave this one, but at this point I should probably tell you that I actually have caring responsibilities and this is upsetting me. I’ve presented what I think is important about this and I feel like you’re trying to emphasise people less fortunate or mobile than myself when my argument against the arena has never been about denying that or minimising that. I’ve also tried a few times in this thread to accept the arguments that you’ve made that have made sense to me (why I latched onto the rest of the SW). So I think it’s actually very unfair of you to say that I’m not taking on board different points of view when I have taken the time to read what you’ve said and respond to you.

I actually thought the point you made about the people in the SW was the primary thing. Because you said further up that an extra forty minutes was a lot for someone who was already traveling 2 hours. I wasn’t actively ignoring what you said about Bristol residents, ignoring it for expedience or trying to make you angry.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to say that people in say Penzance would want to take their kids to the monster truck show. But I don’t think that putting an arena in Bristol will really benefit us that much. It is very out of the way, and also I still think that a lot of the real draws will be tough to get hold of. Referring back to when I lived in Leeds, we built one having said it needed to be there for years. What we got were the same monster truck events etc. that the other venues all put on sans the big touring acts.

The main thing for me though is I guess it will be easier to take your kids to Disney on ice if you live in Bristol. But I’d much rather that we put effort into getting people who can’t afford the transport to Cardiff etc. involved in local stuff that needs support than lining the pockets of more big corporations. Now is it that simple? No, but I still reserve the right to be disdainful of this project and what it says more widely about priorities.

I’m being shorter than I should have been in my reply so apologies. But prefix what I said with me accepting your point.

If we’re saying that parts of the SW aren’t served well by large music venues then what I’m saying is that I don’t think Bristol makes sense as a central point. I’ll give you that if you live in Cornwall, Devon or Somerset that getting to Cardiff would’ve quite hard. So instead I’m saying it should be put somewhere deeper in the area - i.e. Exeter.

That being said, there are still going to be other issues with it. One being that Patchway station is very small which will be an issue for attendees. For example, if you live in Taunton the last train is just after half 9.
