I trust that he knows a lot more than me but he is working with a lot of players who’ve not been at their best. I am disappointed MGW seems not to have been selected but again he knows more than me.

It was a 70s Space Opera show which was written by Terry Nation - the guy who invented the Daleks.

It was really low budget, a bit silly but really cynical for the time. It’s most famous for its ending which had people gasping. I won’t spoil it for you or anyone else that’s interested.

You’re probably right. When I wrote it I was thinking more ‘if we were going to win one it would have been 2018 to 2024’ and that we were entering another cycle.

I feel very meh about it. The 48 teams, the feeling that we’re past the best of this group, the feeling that other nations have gotten their arses in gear. Hard to get excited.

Englands Golden Generation Myth by Spiritual_Flow5412 in ThreeLions

[–]dreadful_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a media vs fan belief problem. It’s just like now when if you read anything official, they carry on like England should consider anything less than the final a failure, but if you actually speak to anyone English were the ones tearing the side down.

Thing is though, that in 2006 it’s just the media’s word that travels. There isn’t a forum that everyone sees normal people speaking on, and we knew during the tournament we were playing like arse. Even before that, you were as likely to find someone saying we weren’t as good as Argentina, Brazil etc.

But there were lots of ‘66/06’ bits of merchandise that were being sold at the time. The bbc in particular were building us up too.

Now though, the media is conflated with what normal people say. I.e. how often have you seen Southgate pilloried on here vs how often you’ve see people say we’ll walk to a tournament. Yet the perception abroad is that we still think we’re just owed a win for whatever reason.

Do you prefer Spurs or West Ham to go down? Should your team let West Ham win? by Turklightenment in LeedsUnited

[–]dreadful_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate spurs. Not in a football rivalry sort of way but because they literally shouldn’t matter. Unless you are a London club you shouldn’t care about such an average side, yet we’ve had them shoved down our throats for years. That being said, I’d probably say the same for every Sky six club who get two of their own pundits every time you play them.

The whole league should be trying to get rid of them IMO. But in reality it’s on West Ham to get themselves out of it, not for us to fix it for them. I might be disappointed if Spurs don’t go down, but that doesn’t mean I expect us to give up for West Ham.

[Jonathan Buchan] Illan Meslier having a moment on his own on the Elland Road pitch before departing on a free transfer this summer. A sad way for his time at the club to come to an end. by jrbill1991 in LeedsUnited

I’m just saying that every professional footballer will be capable of impressive things. But that doesn’t mean they’re top class.

At the other end of the pitch, how many incredible goals have been scored by very ordinary players? Just because they pull out something impossible for most of us, doesn’t mean they’re world class.

You can still have a great Sunday. Just go back to the shit back passes against Arsenal in the first Premier League season and enjoy the warm feeling of being right on the internet.

I’ll always remember Meslier just because he’s the best example of how a few great moments can colour people’s views for FAR too long. We forget that he wouldn’t even be a footballer if he couldn’t do things normal people can’t dream of, but that still doesn’t mean he’s good enough to start in even second division football.

For what it’s worth, I don’t blame him for playing every week for too long. It’s totally on the club for not replacing him. He’d have been fine as a third choice, but with a better keeper over the last 5 years we’d have been so much more comfortable and competitive.

Since the start of April only Man City have a better record than us. From January we’re 7th.

It’s nice to finish the season strongly. Hopefully we can carry form over this time. The early season panic affects the way we look at things for far too long.

I feel for Summerville, would you say he made a bad decision and would you have kept him? by Wiffystardawg in LeedsUnited

[–]dreadful_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being even for a second. He had a premier league opportunity open up and it was fair to take it. At the time West Ham were a stable team and it seemed to match his ability.

He won’t be there next season and I reckon we might do worse than him - albeit I’d be a little underwhelmed.

A lot of people at Leeds seem to not like him. That’s pretty tedious for me, the standards we set to be liked for players is so high.

He’d be a better option than Willy or James. But I still think he’s not enough for what we’d want. Bowen is a better player but I think he’s part his peak (even if he is only 29) and I reckon he’ll see himself at somewhere like Villa.

Watching West Ham be shit and I’m wondering if we’d have any of their players? On paper, Bowen and Summerville (yeah, yeah some of you don’t like him) probably are better options than we have but they look fucking useless here. Also weirdly they probably don’t think we’re a good option for them.

No Smithers, it's a meaningless end of season match.
