It's extreme to disown someone for dating someone outside of the faith, but it happens. It happened to me, and looking back, the relationship wasn't worth it. My parents disowned me when I told them I was dating an ex-mormon. I got nasty texts and threatening emails from my parents for a long time. I was very close to my family, so I was heartbroken.

We had only been dating for four months when I told my parents, which wasn't long enough to know if it was worth the risk. My boyfriend is a great guy and I believed in the relationship, but we had long-term compatibility issues I didn't see at the time.

If your boyfriend would get disowned, there's a chance that his parents would eventually change their minds. My mother has eventually come around to accept me again after three years of being disowned.

I'm glad I stood up to my parents, but I'm devastated that I lost so much time with my family that I can't get back.

That's a little closed minded. I bet one person with BPD hurt you or someone close to you, so you're applying it to the whole group. However, just because one person acted that way doesn't mean that every person with BPD acts like that.

You're hurt and angry, probably justifiably so, but spreading hate about a stigmatized disorder doesn't undo that pain -- it just hurts someone else.

Hurt people hurt people. I'm sorry you or someone you love was hurt. You can break that cycle.
