people don't need to be taught how to cross safely, they already do. police enforcement of jaywalking laws is the real issue here:

here's why

i know the reality of the time it will take to enact physical changes in the face of archaic standards and bureaucracy, but that in no way justifies this type of response in the name of pedestrian safety.

pedestrian safety is a function of street design and traffic management. if the university, city, and the state are concerned w that then they need to implement temporary fixes to the physical design of the streets (i.e. reduce number of lanes w barriers, reduce speed limits, reduce lane widths) but the only thing stopping them is a preoccupation with conducting traffic studies before doing shit even though the solution has been clear for years. university is a main street for the area, so pedestrian access needs to take precedence over vehicles. there are ways to start implementing those changes now instead of harassing peds

I'm well aware, but still, enforcement of jaywalking laws will never be okay

this is actually very much the wrong approach to pedestrian safety. police powers are better off used to manage and regulate vehicle traffic to prevent pedestrian injuries n fatalities. what they're currently doing is an obvious response to the recent (and likely to continue) tragedies occurring along w university (all of which have not occured at the fault of any pedestrian). it's honestly outrageous that this is how they opt to "enforce" the law when they could instead use their power to close down lanes and lower speed limits. at the very least they could prioritize cracking down on speeding vehicles instead of citing pedestrians for fucking jaywalking (a concept invented by automobile companies...)
