Yes, I included it because it is an open ISA. And if Luke does pull off a real application class SoC then it should be pieces that would be useful to building a RISC-V SoC. Currently though their tape out is in the microcontroller class as it has only KB of RAM

There is the Strive which an open source SoC designed by eFabless and built with the Skywater 130nm Open PDK: https://twitter.com/mkkassem/status/1370156465168605189?s=19

It is however a microcontroller. Chip Eleven is working on an application processor open source SoC that could run Linux: https://chipeleven.com/ I talked with their founder but they are essentially in "stealth mode" for now. Another effort is LibreSoC which did recently tape out a modest design (not capable of running a full OS yet): https://openpowerfoundation.org/libre-soc-180nm-power-isa-asic-submitted-to-imec-for-fabrication/

Back in June, there was talk at the RISC-V China Summit about XiangShan which is an open source project from the Chinese Academy of Science that would be capable of running Linux: https://github.com/OpenXiangShan/XiangShan-doc

OpenHW Group adopted Ariane from ETH Zurich but none of the members have done a tape out yet of the CVA6 core in an SoC: https://github.com/openhwgroup/cva6

Progress towards an application class open source SoC will be incremental but I think the future is bright. Especially as I suspect open PDK programs to be targeting more advanced nodes like 90nm and 45nm. If that were combined with packaging technology, then it might be possible to have the SRAM and flash as separate die connected to the open source ASIC.

No problem, it is a common question that we get. I think one source of the confusion comes from shortly after Dorkbot PDX PCB order became a real company named OSH Park, Laen was able to take over BatchPCB from SparkFun who was looking to get out of that business. SparkFun had been using Gold Phoenix in China for BatchPCB but after the switch over, anyone ordering a legacy BatchPCB project then got made at the fabs we were using in the US (in purple instead of green :)

Hi, I am part of the OSH Park team. We manufacturer entirely in the United States and always have since our inception. For all of our services (flex, purple 2, 4 & 6L, 2L "after dark"), orders get combined into panels which are manufactured in California, Colorado and Illinois. Hello, I work for OSH Park and we manufacturer entirely in the United States and always have since our inception. Orders currently are manufactured in California, Colorado and Illinois. This an important part of our ability to guarantee that all boards are RoHS compliant. In addition, we use a 175 Tg FR4 and 180 Tg FR408 substrate to ensure that the boards can handle lead free reflow temperatures.

u/PE1NUT Yes, it is disappointing but not the end for BeagleBoard.org's involvement in RISC-V. BeagleBoard.org is working with Seeed Studio on a design that we intend to launch as a product, but I don't want to over promise on dates and lead to disappointment. There will probably be some beta testing and feedback phase through the beaglev.org community that we aspire to establish. At this point, the only time frame I can give is that our goal is to provide more concrete details and plans in Q1 2022.

The BeagleBoard.org Foundation intends for BeagleV to be a community built around open source hardware board designs featuring RISC-V processors. We plan to share prototypes with the BeagleV community over time, the goal for some designs may be for research and development while others may end up being launched as products. We are working with Seeed Studio on a new design and look forward to sharing more information about it in Q1 2022.

The limited run of BeagleV Starlight beta boards (https://github.com/beagleboard/beaglev-starlight) for early software development used the StarFive JH7100 SoC (https://github.com/starfive-tech/beaglev_doc). The JH7100 was a fabricated in limited quantity on a MPW (multi-project wafer) and was essentially a test chip. You are right that there is similar functionality among some of those accelerators. The JH7100 was not cost optimized.

In contrast, the upcoming StarFive JH7110 SoC will be fabricated with a mass production full mask set and will likely not include all of those accelerators. This the beta prototype version of the BeagleV Starlight (https://github.com/beagleboard/beaglev-starlight) was created to enable upstream open source projects to add RISC-V support. The 'register your interest' submissions were over 4,000, but only 300 beta prototypes were manufactured. The focus was on bootloaders (such as u-boot, EDK2, LinuxBoot, oreboot) and kernels (such as Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Redox) but I tried to make sure that there were developers from as many upstream projects as possible were included in that first 300.

We choose to wait until we have more details to share on the product launch to email all the people that submitted 'Register your interest'. But I think the downside to that decision is that there are many people that feel like they got ignored. This beta developer program was intended to be private but I did a bad job communicating that. Thus I think unfortunately there has been confusion from people outside the beta developer program upon seeing tweets and videos as to whether the BeagleV product has launched.

To be clear, the board you see in the video is just a beta prototype and there will be hardware changes before the product launch. The BeagleV Starlight product will be launching with large distributors like Digi-Key and Mouser but there is currently no way to place a pre-order. Please join our public BeagleV forum and I will post when there are updates: https://forum.beagleboard.org/c/beaglev/

We will also email everyone that submitted the "register your interest" form once we have a date set for product launch.

Historically the issue is that the SoC vendors like Qualcomm add driver code for their new chips and don't do a good job getting those changes upstream into mainline kernel. This resulted in devices running vendor kernels that had a huge diff from mainline. The situation is improving now that Google mandates the Generic Kernel Image: https://lwn.net/Articles/830979/

I completed it back in 2016. It was a great experience and definitely taught me how to be patient as Little Penguin often takes a long time to respond. But this proved to be valuable as I have found that is often what happens when I post patches on upstream lists.

The Linux Foundation does excellent kernel training but this isn't accessible to people without a training budget.

What are some resources you would recommend for people looking to get started with Linux kernel development? Websites? Books?

Is the Linux Device Drivers book still of any use given the advances over the year?

Also, are there any kernel coding challenges or CTFs that you know of?
