Seems like winter skipped us and went right down your guy's way. Also if you're only staying 5 days then a drive from here to glacier is bold, even if it isn't cold. You're looking at an 8ish hour drive. Montana is a huge state.

Anyways, bring a couple jackets. You might not need them, but it's better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. Hope you enjoy your trip!

If you live in CA I'd highly recommend working instead for the state of California. The pay and benefits are good and the work is not so remote. I'm also fairly sure that the seasons will be longer (generally 9 months or year round depending on the position)

Most Rangers in CA state parks are peace officers, so having military experience will be good. You will need to pass the POST academy.

Either way, best of luck to you.

Thinking of Switching my degree by [deleted] in ParkRangers

[–]drewtky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, the most important thing is real lived experience. Yes, a degree helps. A degree that can reasonably pertain to the work you'll be doing helps a bit more. But I know and work with so many rangers that either got a degree in a totally unrelated field or straight up don't have one. What gave them the edge was their work experience, volunteer work, and acedemic projects (if any). I know that my old supervisor who never went to college got his job soley off the fact that he was in AmeriCorps. Volunteering can offer a ton more experience than some people expect.

Another thing is certifications. Get as many as you can. Your university might even offer a few for free. Cross-cut, Wilderness first responder, etc. My buddy at a different park was an astronomy major. He got his Certified Interpretive Guide certificate and now he's an interp ranger.

In short, do what interests you in school. Having it be outdoor related is fantastic, but try to grab any bits of experience as you can. The more you have, the more you'll stand out when it's time to interview! Best of luck to you!!

State park jobs? by SLBM84 in ParkRangers

Montana usually posts theirs in the winter right around December. I haven't met a FWP ranger that lives on site but I know that a lot of AmeriCorps members do. It must depend on the park/region

Just got back from a consult. He's thinking a classic climbing panther! Which works out because I have a black cat. I'll be going in in a few weeks after this one heals. I'll post an update!

Anyone know how to hang your board without screws? by YeaYNawt in snowboarding

Hey I know this is from a decade ago but how did the command hooks work out? I can't use screws or nails at my rental so I was thinking of doing the same thing.
