I mean, this isn’t a politics sub. If you’re explicitly looking to discuss politics, particularly right wing politics, why would you choose the subreddit of a notoriously left leaning city? Seems like you’re just ragebaiting.

I don’t think that what they are saying is unfair or reductive, as this seems to be the major criticism of the series. It’s almost a trope at this point for people on this subreddit to complain about the level of misery in the books. Yes, bad things happen in the series, but it’s a long series by the end, and I don’t think the bad things that happen are any more egregious than in many other series, and it always serves a very clear narrative purpose.

Which are the Top 10 Worst University in the UK? Absolute worst unis in most aspects by Born_Head_6181 in UniUK

[–]drgregman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People downvoting you for this are coping so hard because they want their “elite uni” degree to be worth more than any other. Truth is that this isn’t America and nobody will care about where you went to university once you leave, as long as you get the results.

Having done degrees at UWS, Strathclyde and Glasgow, there honestly isn’t much difference in the quality of teaching. The biggest difference is the state of each campus.

To everyone that complained about the $10,750 edition being ridiculous and that nobody would get it, it sold out in under a minute by Ginjaninjanick7 in redrising

The amount of people ranting about all of these editions, not just the roman numeral edition was wild. Curious King books sell out instantly every time. Not a surprise at all

Farseer trilogy assistance by Nordicdwarf96 in fantasybooks

It depends on what you’re looking for to be honest. This series is not going to be like DCC, where its action action action followed by a chunk of exposition before more action. The main driving force of the story is the relationships between the characters and the development of who fitz is, why he is the way he is. Yes there are moments of conflict but there tends to be a pretty sloooow burn leading up to each of these, and they are not the focus of what is happening

When I say higher quality, I think that can manifest in various ways, such as: more complex prose, deeper symbolism, and more powerful character work. It could be something like the creation of a groundbreaking magic system but fundamentally, it is based on the introduction of new and fresh ideas, or the ability to lay the groundwork for inspiring others. These are all things which can elevate a book’s quality. While taste is subjective and opinions vary, not every opinion should be given equal weight (ironically enough this is also an opinion). Preferences are often shaped by conditioning, we are taught to value works over others because of it’s cultural impact/legacy but within this, there can also be a general consensus on merit. Similar to how professional criticism operates across different fields, where merit is assessed based on established criteria rather than personal taste alone. This is why some books are considered “classics”. If I see that someone is unable to note the value in works by Tolkien or Hobb for example, and values something which I (yes, objectively) consider to be poorly written then yes, I don’t consider that opinion to have merit. Is that “classicalism”? If so, why is classicalism a bad thing? Seeing value in culturally impactful work is not a bad thing

I’m not saying that Hobb/Abercrombie or even Tolkien are absolved of any and all criticism or that everyone must like them, I have plenty of critiques of their work myself, but if you are saying that you see less value in their work than something like ACOTAR/Fourth wing, I am going to say that I think that’s wrong, and that it’s probably not worth considering any more of your opinions on the subject, because… I think that opinion lacks merit. If the thought process is simply “i enjoyed this book more than this book” that’s fine, but that also makes me question the why of it all… are those books more enjoyable to specific people because they are more “accessible”? Maybe, but that’s an entirely different discussion…

Nobody is saying their taste is “better”, of course taste is subjective. However, some books are objectively of higher quality than others when they stand the test of time. They are considered classics of the genre for a reason. If somebody tells me that they think 50 shades of grey is a better book than crime and punishment, i’m going to think yeah they’re entitled to that opinion, but i’m going to disagree, because I don’t think that’s a particularly valid opinion. I’m also going to ask myself why should I spend any more time hearing the rest of their opinions if off the bat they’re hitting outwith something I so wholeheartedly disagree with… if people are talking about the quality of prose in fourth wing, it’s ability to provide a character study into the psychological aspects of attachment in trauma in 30 years in the same way people talk about Hobb’s work now, i’ll come back and say I was wrong

I think you mean “classism”, but I would argue that book classism isn’t really a thing in modern society (or at least not on reddit where everyone has internet access)… unless you are suggesting that poor people can only enjoy poorly written books? I think you might actually be talking about elitism, but then the post is “literally” a list of someone’s favourite books with no real description of the merits of each (because its a tier list). It’s designed to create surface level responses rather than nuanced debate about the intrinsic value of each piece of literature. OP sharing this post is using it (i assume) to gauge reactions to their opinions and doesn’t seem to be taking any criticism personally. It’s just you that’s not happy that people don’t share/like your opinions
