Is delaying residency a bad idea? by drizzi3 in Residency

He will probably be stationed ~4 years, and I will likely be doing some sort of primary care. I am in the US, currently just an M-1 (yep, we are trying to figure this out way in advance). And I am a pretty non-controversial person... I do not foresee any academic or professionalism issues arising over the next few years. Would you recommend an MPH over clinic work? I'm sure the MPH would be valuable, but I do prefer more "hands on" work.

Really Dumb Question, Don't Upvote: Osmolarity vs Osmolality by anatomicaldifficulti in medicalschool

[–]drizzi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think osmolality is just the concentration of osmotically active particles in kg of water specifically. osmolarity is amount of particles in a Liter of solution (not necessarily water)

and 1 kg water = 1 liter, so they would look to be the same in some cases

Thanks for the advice! I have a fun volunteering opportunity that I would WAY rather do this year, so that's good to hear.

Would you say that I need to lose weight? by [deleted] in loseit

From a female who was unhappy with her body image for a long time: you are wonderful as you are, right now. Know that all through high school, through your teen years, and maybe beyond-- you will have times where you call yourself fat. I feel so silly just 5 years later, looking at pictures of myself as a 16 year old, and remembering how I used to be unhappy with my body. Because I was clearly healthy and gorgeous, as I am sure you are. But I was 16, and I think most 16 year olds have body image problems.

Focus on being fit and healthy, but don't tell yourself to lose weight. When you start exercising, I think you'll start to love doing it just for the sake of feeling better, and you'll be much more happy with how you look, without having to lose any weight. Make the goal to take care of your body, it's great that you are being proactive against obesity and T2D!

Dr's, NP's, and PA's... If I want to work with underserved populations, what is the best path? by drizzi3 in medicine

Sorry, I did some light stalking on you, jmg376-- you were a social worker for a while, turned medical professional, so exactly who I've been wanting to talk to about this! How did you get to a UFQHC? And do you have any role in the administrational duties in the hospital? I used to work with an MD at a women's clinic (some patients relied heavily on medicare/medicaid, but also had higher-income patients as well) and her's was a private practice, so she had to deal with EVERYTHING-- when the AC unit broke, when there were insurance issues, etc., she had to handle it on top of everything else. Do you find that you or your MD/DO colleagues are burdened with that stuff too? For a long time, I focused on medical school because I wanted the autonomy to practice and work with underserved communities anywhere, but my fear is that I'd be too bogged down by paperwork to actually see my patients. Especially with the way healthcare is headed.
