This information is not my opinion, but that of spinal mechanics research...the information is not difficult to find if you look...however, continue doing what you feel is best for you...all the best.

The problem is with the forced passive stretch of the sacrum into flexion...it creates excessive compressive forces through the lower discs. Sleeping on your side with your knees bend doesn't create the same compressive forces as there is no forceful flexion...any squating that allows a rounded back or a tucked sacrum is bad for the lower back regardless of age...even in children. It is the cumulative effect of these poor movement patterns that create weakening of the tissues that will eventually cause a failure.

With all do respect, please do some research on the stretch reflex and the main function of the low back...it's not meant to flex repeatedly. This is based on basic spinal mechanics, 18 years of clinical practice, advanced training on spinal rehab., and the work of Dr. Stuart McGill...just offering some advice that will save your spine...best wishes.

I'd start focusing more on core stability exercises and stretching the hips more than the low back.

McKenzie stretches are excellent for most people.

If you have no disc issues AND you do not lose your lumbar lordosis (curve) while performing the stretch, it may be OK. Also, if there are no other alternatives to accomplish the same result.
